The Pentecostal in Chile: Its Main Social Representations in the 20th Century

Abstract: This article has as specific objective to identify and interprete critically the main representations and images that Chilean society, through the press, literature and cinema made about Pentecostal people during the twentieth century. To achieve this purpose, two of the most recurrent identifications were chosen: the epithet of “canutos” and the characterization of “preaches on the street”. The working method was social historical, and the theoretical approach was placed in the studies of the social representations of Moscovici. The access to primary sources, the tools and conceptual contributions of Moscovici allowed us to analyze the object under study at a social, cultural and religious level.
