THE INSTITUTE OF SOCIAL SCIENCES AND SOCIOLOGY IN RIO DE JANEIRO: INTERVIEW WITH ALZIRA ALVES DE ABREU

Abstract

The interview with Alzira Alves de Abreu forms part of a broader initiative by S&A to record the history of the social sciences course at the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro, which completed 80 years in 2019. Alzira’s trajectory is interwoven with some of the key moments experienced by the social sciences in Rio de Janeiro in their efforts to achieve academic institutionalization and consolidation as a disciplinary field, especially with the investigative activities pursued at the Institute of Social Sciences (ICS), a research centre of the former University of Brazil (now UFRJ), created in 1958. As well as constituting an important source for the recovery of the institution’s memory, her testimony provides tantalizing leads for scholars interested in expanding our understanding of the history of these disciplines in the city.
