BETWEEN AFFINITIES AND DIFFERENCES: FERNANDO HENRIQUE CARDOSO AND THE HISTORICAL SOCIOLOGY

Abstract

This article aims mainly to situate Fernando Henrique Cardoso’s historical-comparative sociology before Reinhard Bendix and Barrington Moore Jr.’s proposals, considering how history and comparison are heuristically mobilized by the Brazilian sociologist. I will examine the sense of Cardoso’s contribution to the debate on historical sociology, which is repeatedly neglected in works that map the area, and of its main contributions or treated indirectly, without major systematization efforts. However, it may not be an exaggeration to suggest that, although Cardoso was not concerned with constructing historical sociology as an autonomous disciplinary field, his formulations seem to provide an indirect contribution to consolidate the area from the periphery’s point of view.
