THE VERTIGO OF MOVEMENT AND THE PRODUCTION OF KNOWLEDGE IN ETHNOMUSICOLOGY

Abstract

This text seeks to offer a journey through the different conditions of movement to which we are exposed as representatives of a field of study that we (still) call ethnomusicology. The text is based on the concepts of movance (theorized by Paul Zumthor) and movement (associated with the proposal of declassification of knowledge by António García Gutiérrez) to think about itinerancy, transit, and mobility as structural constituents: 1) of all phenomena of ethnomusicological interest; 2) of the theoretical positioning of the discipline; 3) of its methodological options; and 4) of the way in which ethnomusicologists have been adopting shared research practices towards a disciplinary progressive ethnomusicology. I argue that this condition of movement intertwines with the universe of study of ethnomusicology (music and sound) and inscribes an intrinsic portability, important agency actions and a permeability condition capable of transforming knowledge into a heuristic force of disciplinary re-edification.
