Trade unionism and Brazilian Health Reform: CUT proposals for health in the period 1981-1991

ABSTRACT

The article analyzes the position of the Workers Union Center (CUT) regarding health between 1981-1991, identifying approximations and distances between its proposals with the principles of the Brazilian Health Reform. This is a case study, based on analysis of documents extracted from the CUT website. The analysis includes proposals from the CUT regarding health care for workers and the participation of the CUT in the struggle for the democratization of health. Results show that the CUT maintained, until the creation of the Unified Health System (SUS), claims aimed at improvements in the health care of workers, although in 1988 it developed proposals on the health system reform.
