The aim of this paper is to understand the intellectual role played by Paulo Emilio Salles Gomes in Brazilian society. Based on the analysis of his film criticism on the newspaper "O Estado de São Paulo" in the fifties, I seek to characterize the process of constructing the cultural and political commitment toward the building of a democratic society in Brazil, who gave detailed analysis of the cinema and reality in the sixties and seventies decades of the 20th Century.
