Different perspectives on abortion and management of the dying process: religious positions and medical discourse

In Brazil, the management of life and the dying process expose different positions in the public sphere, revealing alignments of currents favorable or contrary to altering existing laws. At stake are cultural, social, religious and political issues concerning the definition of the personhood. Medical-scientific, legal and religious knowledge is articulated in distinct forms, conferring legitimacy to discourses. Abortion and euthanasia are frequently interlinked in these debates. This article discusses the debate around these controversial public topics, based on two exemplary cases: 1) the discursive differences identified in the positions in the Evangelical field regarding the decriminalization of abortion; and 2) the incorporation of religious justifications by medical discourse in the case of the orthothanasia process defended by the Federal Council of Medicine.
