Mapping and risk evaluation of Cachoeira River flodding in some urban areas of Itabuna City, Brazil

The flodding maps are a very important instrument to prevent, control and manage the inundations, because of them, it is possible to determine the risk areas. Itabuna is located on the south of Bahia and has about 97.20% (IBGE, 2000) of its population living in urban areas. The city has been suffering with the constant Cachoeira River flood. In general, the time of high water causes inundation, mainly in the area of irregular occupation along the river. Thus, the purpose of this research was recognizing and mapping the physical and environmental aspects of a specific area along the Cachoeira River, which includes the subnormal agglomerates Bananeira, Rua Beira Rio and Jaçana, considering their evaluations in face of inundation phenomenum and emphasizing the definition of potential risk areas. Therefore, It was possible to elaborate, with the support of the ArcView software, a risk map with inundation stains for many cycle periods. The risk areas with major problems are in those subnormal areas, mainly because of the vulnerability of the habitations and the irregular occupation where most of the dwelling are shanties.
