Statistics, as a translation of phenomena under study, and almanacs, as instruments for their dissemination, are today widely used, although many are unaware of the long process involved in their preparation. This article discusses the relationship between statistics, information and knowledge, and presents a brief history of the production of statistics and almanacs, particularly the Statistical Almanac of the State of São Paulo, tracing it back from its beginnings, through its many transformation, and up to its current format.
