We intended to contribute to the understanding the social work profession in Portugal since its emergence to the present day, highlighting the challenges in the context of globalization and social risk. To perform this analysis are situating in the interrelationship State-society, where the Social Work, as a body of specific knowledge stands between the world of the living and the world of systems. We consider the social, political and economic context and values as well as the theoretical influences, organizations and guidelines of social and public policies that determine the model of profession and training model being pursued in Portugal.
