The objective of this study was to build a theoretical framework on the changes faced on a family context after cancer is diagnosed in women. This qualitative study used Symbolic Interactionism as a theoretical reference and the Grounded Theory as a methodological reference. Data from twenty subjects (ten women with cancer and their families) was collected from March to November of 2005. This study allows us to understand that this phenomenon consists of three distinct, yet interrelated, processes: the disease diagnosis, changes after diagnosis, and life with cancer. The results permit a clear visualization that both the individual and their families need care provided by a multidisciplinary team. Such a team will have to be able to identify these changes and act within several aspects which accompany the disease in all these processes
