The objective of this exploratory, descriptive study is to better understand perceptions of 54 alumni from the Specialization in Obstetrics Nursing Course from the Federal University of Santa Catarina, Brazil concerning their professional exercise and satisfaction in the course since graduating. The data was collected from April to December of 2006 through completion of a questionnaire. Descriptive statistical analysis of the data obtained from closed questions and initial reading was carried out, followed by ordering and interpretation of the open question responses. For 58.3% of the alumni, the initial application after completion of the specialization was made difficult by non-acceptance from other professionals; 56.3% did not experience any professional discrimination; 37.5% were discriminated by physicians; and 68.5% highlighted that medical hegemony made professional exercise of the specialization difficult. The majority (87.4%) are satisfied with their specialization, 70.8% are optimistic about the future of the specialization, and 98.1% would enroll in a specialization again. The difficulties in professional changes as a result of graduation, linked to professional autonomy, did not generate a lack of satisfaction or pessimism, however; thus demonstrating the capacity for perseverance in exercising a specialization after graduation.
