Octogenarians and caregivers: social-demographic profile and correlation of the life quality variable

This paper aimed to describe the profile of octogenarians and their respective caregivers, as well as correlate their quality of life. In order to do so, a descriptive-quantitative study with a non-probability sample of 25 octogenarians ministered by the Exceptional Medicine Program and their caregivers was carried out in October and November of 2006. The life quality measures were obtained through the Quality of Life-Alzheimer's Disease Scale. The collected data was typed into a databank in Statistical Program for Social Sciences for Windows to obtain the correlation and descriptive Spearman analyses. The "rho" coefficient found in this association was positive and equal to 0,600, with a significance level of 0,01, evidencing pertinence of actions that minimize the difficulties faced by the care-givers as indirect contributors for the foment in the octogenarian's life quality.
