ABSTRACT

Women's awareness about their families' and self care in STDS and AIDS prevention

This study had as major purpose keeping housewives' who are found in a stable relationship and have pre-adolescent and adolescent children awareness awake, concerning to STDs and AIDS prevention. It was accomplished at a popular neighborhood in the City of Cruz Alta, located in the norththwest of the Rio Grande do Sul State. On this neighborhood a Residential Nucleus (COHAB, where eleven women and their families were chosen is found). Establishing this study, support was searched through the Cultural Care Diversity and Universality Theory by Madeleine Leininger, the ethnic-nursing method was selected as a methodology, where the participating-observation as a skill guide, and interviews with pre-selected and/or informal opening questions main guide for data gathering were used. Within the group there were eleven women/families, five were considered to be key informers, being added to these ones the local health agent. Three other neighborhood components, not aware of the study, were considered as general informers. The data analysis was built within an ethnic-nursing basis recommended by Madeleine Leininger and based on cultural domains identification, according to Spradley's orientation (1979). The analysis occured since the data gathering until the findings formulation and cultural themes discovered. The results allowed revealing contrasts on the care treatment with STDs and AIDS prevention. It was found that women didn't take care of themselves because they over trust their husbands/partners; women eventually take care of themselves because they have no confidence in their husbands/partners and women really take care of themselves because they distrust their husbands/partners. Regarding the children, it was observed that parents who care about STD and AIDS prevention have home conversations with them about sex, sexuality, so they can discover peacefully the mysteries that involve sexual life. Facing this data, it was considered that behind family care behaviors that have been presented in STD and AIDS prevention, there exist belief, values and meanings that must be recognized and applied by the nurse who wishes to help prevent STDs and AIDS in families, groups and communities.
