Analysis of the concept of health promotion

Health promotion has been more and more incorporated into Nursing as an integral element of its action scope, acting upon the determinants of the health-disease-care process. The goal of this study is to analyze the historic evolution of the concept of health promotion as expressed in letters on health promotion. To do so, concept analysis has been employed via Rodgers' evolutionary perspective, emphasizing essential attributes, previous events, consequential events, and related concepts. The results indicate that the concept of health promotion is being amplified, influenced by international movements to reduce iniquities. The evolution of the original Ottawa formulation to recent documents has been its enrichment, adopting fundamental strategies towards health promotion, from a defense of health to the identification of actions and commitments towards reaching the health determinants in a globalized world, in Bangkok. The use of a concept analysis model allowed for clarification, making it possible to elaborate theoretical formulations in the areas of health care, especially Nursing.
