The living process in the movies: aging, sexuality, and memories in Copacabana

Despite the fact that aging doesn’t occupy a central theme in cinematography, there are innumerous movies that generate, in the spotlight and the shadows, innumerable images of human aging, offering the possibility to better understand the aging process and its cultural influence. The present article consists of a reflection on the use of movies as a way to critically analyze the aging process. This article aims to discuss the possibilities of the movie, "Copacabana" (Brazil, 2001) as a resource in the educational process of Gerontology. The multiplicity of images and everyday situations of aging people may enhance within young people the understanding of some particular aging aspects. We conclude that by means of the media’s critical pedagogy, citizenship could be cultivated and a society constructed in which theelderly will be respected and live new social roles with fullness.
