Influenza vaccination for the elderly at a teaching health care unit in São Paulo, Brazil

This study aimed at describing the profile of elderly individuals and evaluating seniors' awareness regarding influenza immunization. Data was collected using a questionnaire answered by 162 elderly people assisted at a teaching health care unit in the state of São Paulo, Brazil from April to June, 2006. By means of descriptive statistical analysis, it was observed that most of the individuals were 70 to 79 years old and that females prevailed (66%). Regarding vaccination, 83.8% of the respondents received the vaccination and reported no post-vaccination reactions. The elderly were informed about immunization by radio and television broadcasts and mentioned that its importance was related to disease prevention. It was concluded that the elderly are aware of immunization; however, nurses and other health care professionals must still take the responsibility for providing clearer orientation on the importance of vaccination against influenza and its complications.
