Family processes that sustain resilience: a case study

Resilience is known as a gradually constructed trajectory occurring from a sequence of growing complex proximate processes which begin early in life. The objective of this study is to identify processes lived at the family and individual levels that make it possible for families to face the challenges in their lives in a positive way. This is an in-depth case study developed with a family that has been exposed to many adversities, utilizing an approach supported by the principles of assessment and development of family strengths. The data was collected between 2005 and 2007 through interviews and submitted to content analysis. The main processes evidenced reflect the father's capacity to respond to the needs of his children; to create a relationship space that allows for expression of the children's potentials; to accept help in performing their roles; and to do mutually gratifying activities with them. We highlight the role of the father's sensibility to his children's needs.
