From the press to the stage: feuilleton and theatrical texts in Rio de Janeiro at the second half of the XIXth century

Studies on feuilleton have been developed by Brazilian historians for at least two decades and they have unveiled important aspects of the relations between history and literature. The analyses which highlight the relations between feuilleton and theatrical texts, however, are still unusual. This paper examines this aspect based on the analysis of three plays. The intent is to show that the feuilleton was able to inspire the development of original products which enclosed not only entertainment, but also social and political criticism, and which turned into the authors' instruments of intervention over the reality of their time.
