“The facts to patronize art”: Thomas Georg Driendl and the paintings of the Basilica of Aparecida

Abstract:

This article has as scope the paintings of miracles of the lining of the Matrix Basilica of Aparecida, in Aparecida City, Brazil, better known today as “Old Basilica”. This temple was built in the second half of the 19th century, to meet the high number of pilgrims who visited the locality in order to venerate the Virgin of the Conception Aparecida. The work of the artistic elements was carried out by the German artist Thomas Georg Driendl between 1884 and 1888. In this sense, we sought to analyze the uses of the past by understanding the paintings of the temple lining as an instrument of liturgical appropriation of popular narratives about miracles At the end of the 19th century.
