ABSTRACT
A movie is a multissemiotic text that combines and generates semiotic systems, which generate significance to compose the whole, creating meanings (BALDRY, THIBAULT, 2002). Reading an audiovisual text is a complex task, because one has to be spectator, listener and reader at the same time, with several input channels to decode (NEVES, 2005). As a result, the deaf and hard of hearing public may lack important information for understanding the movie plot without subtitles or sign language windows. In this work, we will cover the subtitling for the deaf and hard of hearing (SDH) and, in particular, the sound effects translation. The goal is to find phraseology in the sound effects translation within the SDH. It is intended to assist not only the subtitler, but also the deaf spectator that will be able to read and identify more easily the sound, improving their reading time, which is important in a genre such as subtitling. Therefore, we use the means of Corpus Linguistics as methodology. Thus, a pilot corpus with fifteen movies was assembled. A preliminary study carried out with one of the categories (sound of object) showed that the methodology used is effective for the intended study; it was possible to establish some guidelines in relation to the sound caused by objects. Such as: focus on sounds that interact with the characters on screen, give preference to translation through sentences that have a full thought, so that one knows what the origin of the sound is and what the type of sound is being translated. As an example, we have: “door slams”, which indicates the source of the noise: the door - and the sound produced: the action of slamming the door.
