MULTILITERACIES AND USES OF DIGITAL INFORMATION AND COMMUNICATION WITH TECHNICAL COURSE STUDENTS

ABSTRACT

This article presents the results of a survey of teachers and students from two technical courses integrated into high school, within the context of the Portuguese language discipline of the Instituto Federal de Educação, Ciência e Tecnologia de Ouro Preto - IFMG - Ouro Preto Campus. The research sought to identify educational uses of digital technologies in the classroom; uses in the daily lives of students, both in and out of school, and sought to contribute to the use of ICTs integrated with curriculum content. Theoretically we base our work the studies developed by researchers in the areas of literacies, multiliteracies and ICT. We report on a qualitative study that used case study and intervention-research methodological procedures. The collected data show that, despite ICTs having strong presence in the daily lives of students, they have been little explored in the classroom, while students believe in their contribution to the teaching and learning of different subjects. The data collected also point to the importance of developing multiliteracies and uses of ICTs through integrated projects with curriculum content, providing teachers effective ways to work with relevant content and helping pupils to develop autonomy and creativity, with group work, research, and information selection.
