O trabalho feminino no espaço doméstico: gênero e classe no Jornal das Famílias

ABSTRACT

In the 19th century, a wide diversity of periodicals dedicated to female readers was published in Brazil. Some of them were written by and for women, while others merely aimed at a female audience of readers and consumers. Although the Jornal das Famílias (published between 1863 and 1878) had its share of female contributors, a large number of its sections was written by men. The young writer Machado de Assis, one of its main collaborators, became well known over the years. Female labor was one of the topics approached in both the periodical and Assis' short stories. By presenting different perspectives on the same theme, the Jornal allowed its female readers to form their own opinions about this news: the insertion of women in the labor world.
