The new realities of Guimarães Rosa’s ‘fictâncias’

ABSTRACT

In this article, we propose to approach the role of João Guimarães Rosa in the literature of his time, examining the work Primeiras estórias (‘First Stories,’ 1962) and problematizing his relationship with History through his initial story as well as his last one, whose main character is Menino, who would have traveled to the place where the great city was being built, in reference to the construction of the capital city of Brasilia and the historical process of urbanization of Brazil, which is observed in his book through the perspective of a child. Our analysis focuses on the issue of fiction as the mediator that produces the discourses of Literature and History, which is the idea advocated by such theoreticians as Luiz Costa Lima and Carlo Ginzburg. Our results underline that the literary perspective of Rosa, when approaching History, does not reproduce the discourse of historiography, but bets on a creative new presentation.
