Between Boulanger and Dreyfus: lights and shadows of the Third French Republic in the reflection of the Quaderni

Abstract

As witnessed by numerous passages of the Prison Notebooks, France is for Gramsci an exceptional political laboratory. The analysis aims to explore his understanding of two specific moments in recent French history: the attempted coup d’état by General Georges Boulanger in 1889 and the Dreyfus affair. Through a careful philological analysis of the texts and an accurate reconstruction of the sources and historiographical references, I will investigate the historical and theoretical reflections that the Sardinian thinker develops starting from these two moments of the Third French Republic, by also shedding a new light on the relationship between Gramsci and France.
