New religiousness in the capital of Brazil

This paper socialises some of the results of the research entitled Sociology of Adherence: mystical and esoteric practices in the Federal District, that has been developed in the Department of Sociology of the University of Brasilia since 1994. It received financial support from the CNPq (National Research Committee). The research focuses on the mystical-esoteric groups in that capital and the region around it. It identifies the main meanings, values, and world-view, and highlights the building of a religiousness based on the great interaction between groups, religions, rituals, doctrines and practices. These are fundamental questions for the reflection on the elements around which the search for the sacred is anchored nowadays.
