Interactions between class origin, race and gender in access to the social top in Brazil

Abstract

The inequality of access to the privileged top of the social structure in Brazil is analyzed in light of the complex interactions between class origin, race and gender. Research questions address the full and direct association between origin and destination, the direct association by educational level, and the economic returns to education by taking a cohort approach when analyzing temporal changes. Effects are estimated in predicted probabilities using logistic models with social mobility data from PNAD 2014. Class origin ranks opportunities in different outcomes which are in turn modulated by interactions between origin, race and gender.
