Special section Editorial – Architecture, disaster risk reduction and gender issues in informal settlements

Abstract

Within the framework of the Marielle Franco Community Design Award competition, the PUC-Rio university hosted the 1st Latin American Scientific Seminar on Issues of Risk, Humanitarian Architecture and Gender, which resulted in the collection of articles gathered for this special section. This Portuguese and Castilian-speaking meeting of European, African, and Latin American countries had as a guiding theme material and immaterial expressions of the right to the city: community actions aimed at reducing risks, improving public spaces, infrastructure and housing. In line with the Marielle Franco Award that rewards humanitarian architects, the seminar encouraged the debate on gender issues and the role of women. From their struggles for the family, adequate housing, security, hygiene and privacy, combating discrimination, the right to equal opportunities, political participation, economic autonomy, education, and involvement in the planning, design, production, use and occupation of urban space. The communications had as a background the SDGs – Sustainable Development Goals, in particular, those related to eradicating poverty, mitigating inequalities, strengthening sustainability, security and urban resilience. Other referents were the Paris Agreement on Climate Change, the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction, and the Manifesto for Women's Right to the City. This article discusses the seminary themes within the conceptual and practical framework of international development, bridging the gaps identified by the selected authors & papers.
