The representational spaces of urban occupations in the intersection between macro and micro-political struggles

Abstract

This text aims to analyze qualitative data of representational spaces from the Urban Occupations (UOs), specifically the UOs Carolina Maria de Jesus and Nova Canudos, carried out in the first half of 2021 by the Homeless Workers Movement (MTST in Portuguese), in the periphery of the city of São Paulo. The concept of “representational spaces” is part of the Henri Lefebvre’s space production theory, which articulates the concepts of “spatial practices” and “representations of spaces”. We use methods to analyze qualitative data (from the text written by Guilherme Boulos and videos about the UOs) to demonstrate socio-political attributes of representational spaces of those UO. These representational spaces express their macro and micro-political struggles which characteristics were systematized and synthesized in a frame based on categories elaborated by Suely Rolnik (2018) as part of her macro and micro-politics insurgencies theory. From the point of view of macro-political struggles, they denounce social inequalities and injustices and demand collective rights. From the point of view of micro-political struggles, they constitute political acts that announce ways of well living apart and together on solidarity bases.
