Intellectuals and Politics in Chile: Notes on the Magazine Aurora de Chile (1938-1940)

Abstract

The purpose of this article is to examine the magazine Aurora de Chile which circulated in Santiago between 1938-1940. Created by Pablo Neruda, this publication presented itself as an important media of the Alliance of Intellectuals of Chile for the Defense of the Culture (AICH), entity founded in articulation with other international organizations of intellectuals and oriented by the Comintern. The magazine focused on the political and cultural debates of those years in Chile and acted vigorously in defending the principles of democracy, public freedoms and against fascism. In this study I try to demonstrate the role of this magazine as one of the voices of the frenetic perspective that began to guide the Chilean Communist Party in the period.
