einstein (São Paulo) is an open-access, peer-reviewed journal that publishes exceptional work advancing our understanding of medicine and health research across diverse specialties and disciplines. This interdisciplinary approach to disseminating health research is critical for making the results of basic, translational, and clinical research available to the community. We are a general medical journal that publishes prominent research in the areas described below, as well as others:

Preprints
|
The journal accepts manuscripts deposited in preprint repositories, such as SciELO Preprints, provided they are not under simultaneous peer review at another journal. Examples include medRxiv, bioRxiv, preprint, SciELO Preprints, etc. All manuscripts previously deposited in preprint repositories undergo single-anonymous peer review by at least two anonymous reviewers and must comply with all journal requirements and editorial processes. When submitting the manuscript, the corresponding author must state in the Letter to the Editor whether the manuscript has been deposited on a preprint server and provide the corresponding Digital Object Identifier (DOI). |
Peer Review Process
|
einstein (São Paulo) uses an online submission system to manage its editorial process. Manuscripts are first received by our journal’s editorial office, which is responsible for checking the submission checklist, the quality of images, tables, and graphs, and the authors' Open Researcher and Contributor Identifier (ORCID) iDs. If any document does not comply with the journal's instructions for authors, the corresponding author will be notified by email and asked to provide the required document within a specified deadline. Both the Editor-in-Chief and the Scientific Editor conduct an initial evaluation of all manuscripts. Following this preliminary assessment, manuscripts are assigned to Associate Editors who are experts in the relevant subject area. They evaluate the work based on its importance, originality, clarity, and relevance to the field. Based on this assessment, the Associate Editors decides whether the manuscript should proceed to single-anonymous peer review by at least two anonymous reviewers. Following peer review, the Associate Editor returns the manuscript to the authors to address the reviewers' comments. Once the revised version is received, it is either reviewed by the Associate Editor or sent back to the original reviewers, depending on the nature of the requested revisions. Based on the reviewers' recommendations, the Associate Editor forwards their recommendation to the Editor-in-Chief, who makes the final decision. The corresponding author is notified of this final decision by email. After this process, accepted articles are copyedited and sent for typesetting and formatting. Post-Peer Review Publication of Manuscripts For manuscripts accepted for publication, the name, institutional affiliation, and ORCID iD of the Associate Editor who approved the final version will be made available. A data availability statement, as declared by the author on the submission form, will be included in all publication categories (research article, review article, case report). Post-Peer Review Publication of Manuscripts

Open Data

The journal einstein (São Paulo) recommends that all research data be deposited in public repositories or provided by the author upon request from editors, reviewers, or other authors interested in furthering the research. The journal will respect the decision of authors who choose to keep their research data private, provided this is declared in the open science compliance form. Authors are encouraged to use data repositories from institutions where at least one author is affiliated. Misconduct, Errata, and Retractions
|
The journal adheres to the guidelines of the Code of Conduct for Journal Editors (COPE), available at: https://publicationethics.org/guidance/guideline/retraction-guidelines The journal publishes errata exclusively for information within the Methods or Results sections. Errata will not be issued for author names, abbreviations, affiliations, or title changes. The corresponding author must thoroughly review this information in the final PDF proof sent for approval prior to publication. Grounds for retraction include plagiarism, evidence of unreliable data, the use of material or data without the authors' prior authorization, or a conflict of interest that has affected the interpretation of the work or editorial recommendations. Conflicts of Interest

When submitting a manuscript, authors are responsible for disclosing any financial or other conflicts that could have influenced their work. These conflicts can be personal, commercial, political, academic, or financial. They may arise when authors, reviewers, or editors have interests that could influence the preparation, data interpretation, evaluation, or decision-making process for a manuscript. Use of Similarity Check Software

Use of Artificial Intelligence Tools
|
Authors must transparently disclose any use of generative AI tools (e.g., ChatGPT, Bard) in the preparation of their manuscripts. If these tools are used for data analysis, figure generation, or study design, this must be described in the Methods section. If used for writing assistance or language editing, it must be described in the Acknowledgments section. The name of the tool, its application, and the reason for its use must be stated. Authors remain fully responsible for the accuracy, originality, and integrity of all content, including AI-assisted material. Authors must carefully review and edit the output, as AI can generate information that is incorrect, incomplete, or biased. If the use of an AI application is detected during the similarity check and was not properly disclosed, the manuscript will be automatically rejected. |
Sex and Gender Equity

In addition to promoting diversity in authorship and gender equity on its editorial board, the journal complies with the Sex and Gender Equity in Research (SAGER) guidelines. These guidelines direct the reporting of sex and gender information in study design, data analysis, results, and interpretation of findings. |
Ethics Committee

Research involving human subjects conducted in Brazil, in accordance with Chapter XII.2 of CNS Resolution 466/2012 from the Ministry of Health/National Health Council, must provide documentation of project approval by the Research Ethics Committee and/or CONEP. For studies with human subjects, all patients or their legal guardians must consent to participate by signing an informed consent form (ICF), as per CNS Resolution 466/2012. Research involving human subjects conducted in other countries must provide local ethics documentation. Research involving animals in Brazil, in accordance with CONCEA Normative Resolution 30/2016, must provide documentation of project approval from the Ethics Committee on the Care and Use of Animals. The journal accepts original contributions in English only. Following editorial approval, all articles undergo single-anonymous peer review by at least two anonymous reviewers. Reviewer comments are sent to the authors, who may then revise their manuscript or provide a rebuttal. After addressing the suggested corrections, the revised article must be resubmitted to einstein (São Paulo) via the journal's submission system. Articles are published only upon final acceptance by both reviewers and editors. Authors of articles published in the journal einstein (São Paulo) retain copyright and grant third parties the right to use, reproduce, or disseminate their article under the terms of the journal's adopted CC BY Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 license. Accepted Article Types

The journal einstein (São Paulo) publishes material in the following categories: Original Article, Health Economics and Management, Case Report, Reviews, Image-Based Learning, Letters to the Editor, and Special Articles. The journal also publishes special issues containing reviews and original articles on specific topics. Original Article Original Articles report on the results of scientific research relevant to medicine and health, including clinical, translational, and basic research. Submissions must be original, unpublished, and structured with the following sections: 1) Structured Abstract (Objective, Methods, Results, Conclusion), 2) Introduction, 3) Methods, 4) Results, 5) Discussion, 6) Conclusion, and 7) References. Original Articles should not exceed 4,500 words, with an abstract of up to 250 words, a maximum of 7 figures/tables, and 50 references. All manuscripts deemed of potential interest by the Editor and Associate Editors will be peer-reviewed. Health Management and Economics Articles that report on knowledge and concepts related to effective practices in health management, administration, and economics. Submissions must include the following sections: 1) Structured Abstract (Objective, Methods, Results, Conclusion), 2) Introduction, 3) Methods, 4) Results, 5) Discussion, 6) Conclusion, and 7) References. They should not exceed 4,500 words, a 250-word abstract, 7 figures/tables, and 50 references. All manuscripts deemed of potential interest by the Editor and Associate Editors will be peer-reviewed. Case Report Case reports detailing a specific medical condition, particularly rare cases, presenting data relevant to the reader, describing features, history, case management, etc., including a brief literature review and relevant discussion. They should not exceed 1,000 words, a 250-word abstract, 2 figures/tables, and 10 references. All manuscripts deemed of potential interest by the Editor and Associate Editors will be peer-reviewed. Review Reviews will cover relevant topics in medicine, health, and health economics. They can be Systematic Reviews, which synthesize previous research using defined methods to identify, categorize, analyze, and report on a specific topic. They can also be Review Articles, which should provide new insights and perspectives to highlight key areas or cover poorly understood fields. Often, reviews will be prepared by authorities in the subject area. Simple literature reviews typically do not meet these requirements. Review Articles can be mini-reviews (concise reviews on a specific topic, up to 2,000 words and 30 references) or larger reviews (covering a subject in greater depth, up to 4,500 words, 4 tables/figures, a 250-word abstract, and 100 references). Reviews may be requested by the editors, but prospective authors can also send a pre-submission inquiry by email, explaining the topic's importance and relevance to the journal's readership. All manuscripts deemed of potential interest by the Editor and Associate Editors will be peer-reviewed. Image-Based Learning A typical pathognomonic image—ultrasound, CT scan, X-ray, MRI, surgical photograph, microscopy, or clinical sign—followed by an explanatory text. Submissions should not exceed 300 words and 10 references. All manuscripts deemed of potential interest by the Editor and Associate Editors will be peer-reviewed. Letters to the Editor Letters to the Editor may share important insights on topics relevant to medicine and health research, comment on or discuss articles published in the journal, or report original ongoing research, scientific findings, etc. They should not exceed 150 words and 5 references. Letters to the Editor are not peer-reviewed and are published after evaluation by the Editor and relevant Editorial Board members. Special Articles This section includes scientifically relevant topics that do not fit into the above categories and may include consensus reports, recommendations, or guidelines. Submissions should not exceed 3,000 words and 40 references. All manuscripts deemed of potential interest by the Editor and Associate Editors will be peer-reviewed. |

Manuscript Preparation

Title The article title, concise yet informative, should be written in English. Abstract Abstracts must be written in English and are limited to 250 words. For original articles, abstracts must be structured with the following headings: Objective, Methods, Results, and Conclusion. They should outline the key aspects of the study and highlight the most relevant findings. For articles in other sections, the abstract should be a single, unstructured paragraph. Keywords Provide between 5 and 10 keywords in English that reflect the article's content. Keywords must be selected from the National Library of Medicine's Medical Subject Headings (MeSH) database, available at https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/mesh/. Clinical Trial Database Registration For Clinical Trials, provide the registration number from the clinical trial database (https://clinicaltrials.gov)* *Important Note: In support of the clinical trial registration policies of the World Health Organization (WHO) and the ICMJE, the journal einstein (São Paulo) recognizes the importance of these initiatives for the registration and international dissemination of clinical study information. Accordingly, the journal will only accept for publication clinical research articles that have been assigned an identification number in a Clinical Trial Registry validated by WHO and ICMJE criteria. A list of these registries is available at https://clinicaltrials.gov or on the PubMed website under the <clinicaltrials.gov> section. This registration number must be provided at the end of the abstract. Text The text must follow the required structure for each article category. In-text citations should be numbered sequentially with superscript Arabic numerals in parentheses. All abbreviations and acronyms must be defined in full at their first mention. Abbreviations or acronyms should not appear in the title or abstract. In table and figure captions, each abbreviation must be followed by its full term. Acknowledgments This section acknowledges the contributions of individuals who deserve recognition but do not meet the criteria for authorship. It should also be used to provide information about financial and/or technical support, etc. Digital Assets Tables All tables (a maximum of 4) must include a title, column headers, and be cited in the text. They must be numbered sequentially with Arabic numerals in order of their appearance in the text. Table footnotes must define any abbreviations and specify the statistical tests used. Figures All figures (images, graphs, photographs, and illustrations) must be cited in the text and submitted at their intended publication size or larger. If a figure has been previously published, written permission for reproduction must be obtained from the author/publisher, and the caption must include the original source.
