ABOUT THE JOURNAL

Basic Information

The Afro-Ásia journal, the semi-annual publication from the Center for Afro-Oriental Studies at the Federal University of Bahia (UFBA) (Salvador, Brazil), has been in circulation since 1965.  This publication is dedicated to publicizing studies related to African and Asian populations, as well as their descendents in Brazil and beyond.  The published works in Afro-Ásia aim to reflect on and debate such themes like the history of slavery, race relations, and the complex processes of identity construction, and they have also produced significant references for progressive socio-political action oriented towards combating ethno-racial inequalities in today's society.  Afro-Ásia began to offer a high-quality publication in 1998, being printed in high-technology publishing houses since 2002.  Since 2005, it became available in digital format on the website: http://www.afroasia.ufba.br.  The Afro-Ásia journal is considered a center of excellence at UFBA, and maintains international prestige due to the quality of its publishing and production, its pioneer attitude in the research field, and having on its editorial advisory board, doctors from various Brazilian universities, along with representatives from higher education institutions in the United States, such as Harvard University, University of California at Los Angeles, Pittsburgh University, University of Texas at Austin, University of Michigan, and Brown Universities; in France, Paris IV, Unesco/Paris, and École des Hautes Études en Sciences Sociales; in the United Kingdom, University of Birmingham; and African universities in Mozambique, Benin, and Angola.  It has already had as its editors, João José Reis, Antônio Sérgio Guimarães, Renato da Silveira, Waldemir Zamparoni, and Luis Nicolau Parés.  The current editors are Jocélio Teles dos Santos, Florentina da Silva Souza and Wlamyra Albuquerque.

Its abbreviated title is Afro-Ásia (impress), and it should be used in bibliographies, footnotes, references and bibliographic strips.
