Arquivos do Instituto Biológico is an open access journal and adopts the rolling pass system. It is edited since 1928 by Instituto Biológico, part of the Agency for Agribusiness Technology of the Department of Agriculture and Supplies of the State of São Paulo. It publishes original scientific studies in English that contribute to the development of agricultural sciences.

To quote the journal in bibliographical references, footnotes and captions, it is recommended to use the following abbreviated title: Arq Inst. Biol.

Scope and editorial policy

 

Arquivos do Instituto Biológico publishes high-quality quality scientific articles, which contribute significantly to the development of the Agricultural Sciences, in the field of animal and vegetal sanity, related to agribusiness and its implication in the agri-environment, including quality and food safety. It is also accepted papers on urban pests.

AIB's editorial policy is based on the responsibility of being a reference scientific communication vehicle for the Agrarian Sciences area. For this, AIB requires its editorial board, reviewers and authors to comply with ethical and integrity criteria. AIB is committed to Open Science, strongly supporting and encouraging its practice in publishing research results.

 

 

Evaluation process

 

The manuscripts submitted to Arquivos do Instituto Biológico are preliminarily analysed by the Editorial Committee. During the pre-analysis, the Committee checks if it fits in the scope and merit for publication. The manuscripts that do not match the editorial requirements or that need to be redrafted will be rejected without a review. The preselected manuscripts with be submitted to a critical analysis of at least 2 Scientific Consultants (ad hoc) chosen by specialists in the field of the submitted article. The Scientific Consultant also fills an evaluation form. The acceptance of the article is in agreement with the Editor-in-chief of the Editorial Committee. In case the article is rejected by part of the Scientific Consultants, the Associate-editor will issue a conclusive technical opinion. The reviews and conclusive technical opinion will be forwarded to the authors for corrections, justifications and presentation of the new version of the draft, which is compared to the original version by the Editor-in-chief of the editorial committee. Once it is accepted, the article is forwarded to reference, abstract and vernacular review. After the layout change, the text is submitted to final corrections by the authors and by the Editorial Committee. All articles are published following the approval order.

 

 

Ethical considerations

 

AIB is committed to ensuring integrity at all stages of the editorial process and for everyone involved. All cases involving suspected misconduct will be investigated by the journal under the highest standard of academic and ethical rigor, so that all doubts are resolved. There is a commitment to the publication of corrections, clarifications, retractions, as well as notes of concern, if necessary. In the event of any complaint or observation of misconduct by any party, the editorial process involving the manuscript under investigation will be halted, and all parties involved will be informed of the reason for the halt. The evaluation process can be resumed if the misconduct is not proven. If the misconduct is proven, depending on the party involved, one or more actions may be taken:

  • the manuscript will be removed from the process;
  • the journal will not receive submissions from the group of authors;
  • the editor will be removed from his duties in the journal;
  • the reviewer will not make new contributions to the journal.

Editorial process: The acceptance criteria for all works are the quality and originality of the research and its meaning for our readers. Unless otherwise indicated, the revision of the manuscripts is double-blind. Editors are selected for manuscripts based on knowledge.
Editors should always:

  • Ensure that the peer review process is based on academic neutrality and impartiality;
  • Ensure the confidentiality of Referees;
  • Assess and investigate all cases in which there is suspicion of misconduct or unethical behavior;
  • Prevent financial interests from compromising ethical standards of publication;
  • Ensure to the best of their ability that there is no plagiarism, fraudulent data or results;
  • Ensure that the links informed about preprint deposit and / or data repository are valid and meet the AIB criteria.

All submissions will be considered by the Editor-in-chief and/or Associate-editor to determine whether they fall within the scope of the journal and to ensure homogeneity in terms of scientific standards. If the manuscript fits this first evaluation, the submissions will be sent for external review. Submissions that are not approved in the first stage will be returned quickly to the corresponding author, so that the submission to another journal is not postponed. Manuscripts sent for external review will generally be evaluated by at least two experts; however, in mitigating circumstances (for example, due to a delay caused by a late reviewer), the Associate-editor may make a recommendation based on the comments of only one reviewer, in addition to his own evaluation of the manuscript.

Revisions and resubmissions of previously rejected manuscripts will normally be sent to the same reviewers who saw the original version, as long as those reviewers are available. However, in some cases, the Associate-editor may decide that it is inappropriate to re-invite one or more original reviewers and/or consider that a new reviewer is necessary.

The revised manuscripts must be sent within the deadline established in the notification to the authors of the "minor revision" or "major revision" decision. Revised manuscripts sent after these periods will be considered completely new submissions and will again be subject to the complete review procedure. This deadline will be strictly adhered to, except in unusual circumstances, which must be explained in full, in writing, to the Editor-in-chief.

The revised manuscripts must be in their final form when sent, using some highlighting to indicate the revised sections of the manuscript. The proofs received afterward are only for correction of typographical errors. They should not be used for final changes to articles; these changes must be made to the manuscript before being published by the editor. Important changes to the text at the proof stage may be charged to the author and may delay publication.

Peer review process: AIB expects reviewers to comply with Committee on Publications Ethics’s (COPE) Guidelines for this purpose, including respect for confidentiality of the review and not reveal any details of the manuscript, during or after the review process, other than those that are disclosed by the journal. AIB is committed to open science initiatives and will gradually offer reviewers the possibility of opening their identities. For this, the reviewers must express prior agreement after consulting the Editorial Committee.

When receiving an invitation to review any paper, referees should be committed to:

  • Refuse the invitation if there is any conflict of interest;
  • Provide a rigorous review;
  • Accept invitations only when capable of completing the review by the deadline;
  • Report any potentially relevant references published but not cited in the text;
  • Keeping strict confidentiality concerning papers reviewed, not discussing them with colleagues nor using information for the reviewer’s own benefit until the paper’s publication;
  • Check if the data are available in open access repositories and if they are valid and reliable.

Information and storage of research data: whenever possible, AIB encourages authors to share all data in the manuscript. It also encourages authors to provide the location where the raw data are stored, unless this is avoided for ethical, privacy or confidentiality reasons.

To ensure full transparency of the data obtained, AIB requires authors to declare that, for data unavailable in public repositories, these must be available upon request. Here, the authors must inform why these data are not publicly available.

In studies that include original data, at least one author must confirm that he has full access to all study data and assumes responsibility for the integrity of the data and the accuracy of the data analysis.

Alternatively, authors can make the data available as a supplementary file to the manuscript.

If data sharing does not apply to the article, as no data set was generated or analyzed during the current study, this must be stated.

Research data include, but are not limited to: raw data, processed data, spreadsheets, statistics, laboratory notebooks, field notebooks, questionnaires, photographs, protein or genetic sequences, methodologies, standards and protocols. Visit re3data.org to help identify registered data repositories and certificates relevant to the subject area.

The publication of the data must be completed before the final version of the article (in case of acceptance), so that it can refer to the published data.

Record of nucleotide sequence data: The nucleotide sequence data can be sent in electronic format to any of the three main collaborative databases: DDBJ, EMBL or GenBank. The information about the deposit place, as well as the access number, must be included in the work.

Access numbers to the nucleotide and amino acid sequence must be incorporated into the manuscript after the Material and Methods section. Any article that does not have an access number per proof step will not be published until it is provided.

Conflict of interest: AIB requires all authors to disclose any potential sources of conflict of interest. Any interest or relationship, financial or not, that can be perceived as influencing an author's objectivity is considered a potential source of conflict of interest. These must be disclosed when directly relevant or directly related to the work that the authors describe in their manuscript. Potential sources of conflict of interest include, but are not limited to, the employment or financing of a commercial entity, the ownership of patents or shares, participation in a company's board of directors, participation in a company's advisory board or committee and consultancy for or receiving a company's speaker fees. The existence of a conflict of interest does not exclude publication. If the authors have no conflict of interest to declare, they must also state this at the time of submission and include a declaration in the Conflicts of Interest section. It is the responsibility of the corresponding author to review this policy with all authors and collectively disclose with submission all commercial and other pertinent relationships. The discovery of a failure to properly disclose a conflict of interest in the submission or during the review process may result in the rejection of a manuscript or other sanctions on authors.

Funding: Authors should list all funding sources in the Funding section with the respective project number. The funding agency must be written in full, followed by the registration of DOI funders and the grant number. Authors are responsible for the accuracy of the designation of funders.

Authorship: The list of authors must accurately illustrate who contributed to the work and how. The section entitled "Authors 'contributions" will contain the contribution that each individual author made to the manuscript, using the CRediT taxonomy. The 14 collaborative functions, which should be attributed to the authors according to their participation, are described below. Contributions by anyone who does not meet the criteria for authorship should be listed, with the collaborator's permission, in the “Acknowledgments” section (for example, to acknowledge contributions from people who provided technical help, data collection, written assistance, or a department chairperson who provided general support). Before submitting the article, all authors must agree to the order in which their names will be listed in the manuscript.

Conceptualization: Ideas; formulation or evolution of overarching research goals and aims; Data curation: Management activities to annotate (produce metadata), scrub data and maintain research data (including software code, where it is necessary for interpreting the data itself) for initial use and later re-use; Formal analysis: Application of statistical, mathematical, computational, or other formal techniques to analyze or synthesize study data; Funding acquisition: Acquisition of the financial support for the project leading to this publication; Investigation:  Conducting a research and investigation process, specifically performing the experiments, or data/evidence collection; Methodology: Development or design of methodology; creation of models; Project administration: Management and coordination responsibility for the research activity planning and execution; Resources: Provision of study materials, reagents, materials, patients, laboratory samples, animals, instrumentation, computing resources, or other analysis tools; Software: Programming, software development; designing computer programs; implementation of the computer code and supporting algorithms; testing of existing code componentes; Supervision: Oversight and leadership responsibility for the research activity planning and execution, including mentorship external to the core team; Validation: Verification, whether as a part of the activity or separate, of the overall replication/reproducibility of results/experiments and other research outputs; Visualization: Preparation, creation and/or presentation of the published work, specifically visualization/data presentation; Writing – original draft: ​Preparation, creation and/or presentation of the published work, specifically writing the initial draft (including substantive translation); Writing – review & editing: Preparation, creation and/or presentation of the published work by those from the original research group, specifically critical review, commentary or revision – including pre- or post-publication stages.

When submitting papers for review, authors should:

  • Observe criteria used to assign authorship for only the researchers involved in the study, not naming as coauthors those who did not participate in the study;
  • Cite and correctly reference all data and interpretations of data from other publications;
  • Report any conflict of interest for all authors;
  • Report all financial sources;
  • Submit to review only unpublished papers that are not simultaneously submitted to other periodicals, ensuring the reliability and authenticity of data;
  • Report retractions or corrections of errors whenever necessary.

Corresponding author: The corresponding author is the one individual who takes primary responsibility for communication with the journal during the manuscript submission, peer review, and publication process. The corresponding author typically ensures that all the journal’s administrative requirements, such as providing details of authorship, ethics committee approval and disclosures of relationships and activities are properly completed and reported, although these duties may be delegated to one or more coauthors. The corresponding author should be available throughout the submission and peer review process to respond to editorial queries timely, and should be available after publication to respond to critiques of the work and cooperate with any requests from the journal for data or additional information should questions about the paper arise after publication.

ORCID: It is mandatory to include the ORCID of the corresponding author at the time of submission of the manuscript. After acceptance, the inclusion of ORCID of all authors will be required.

Publication ethics: The journal supports and follows the principles and standards recommended by COPE, an international reference organization in integrity and ethics in scientific publications. Thus, the entire process, selection and publication criteria in the journal follow the rules of conduct and ethics, according to https://publicationethics.org/files/Code_of_conduct_for_journal_editors_Mar11.pdf.

AIB uses Crossref's Similarity Check software to detect similarity with other texts in submitted manuscripts.

 

 

Preprint

 

AIB encourages authors to post preprints as a way to accelerate the dissemination of research.

If a manuscript with a preprint is accepted for publication in AIB, the preprint and published article will link to each other when the article appears online.

AIB recommends that all authors link their ORCID to the preprint account during the submission process.

AIB also encourages editors to consider comments and feedback available on the preprint record to inform their editorial decision, and where relevant, editors may incorporate those comments in their editorial feedback to authors.

To facilitate the deposit of preprint, AIB fully supports the use of servers such as BioRXiv, AgriRxiv and SciELO Preprints.

 

 

Copyright

 

Once the manuscript is approved, the authors automatically grant an exclusive license to publish the submitted article in electronic format, including photographs that can be used to promote the article through social media. All AIB content, except where identified, is licensed under a Creative Commons License CC BY.

 

 

Digital preservation policy

 

AIB is committed to ensuring long-term access to all of its digital content. AIB has its collections preserved in the Cariniana Digital Preservation Services Network, associated with the LOCKSS Program developed by Stanford University Libraries.

 

 

Repository police

 

Arquivos do Instituto Biológico allows the deposit and access of preprint and published versions of an article in an institutional repository or another one chosen by the author, without embargo. AIB is included in Diadorim, directory of editorial policies for Brazilian scientific journals.

 

 

Promoting your article

 

Publishing is not the end of the process! You can help spread your article and make sure it is as widely read and quoted as possible.

AIB uses social media to promote the work of our authors. For this, the author can send images (photo, infographic, slides) or video (2 or 3-minute maximum) that represents his research. The image or video will be used in the promotion of your article with the due credits. The file can be attached as Supplemental File NOT for Review.

 

 

General information

 

A cover letter should come along with the manuscript describing the importance of the work in the field, qualifying it for publication in Arquivos do Instituto Biológico.

In addition, a statement signed by the corresponding author on behalf of all authors, must be attached as a supplementary document in the designated area in the online system where the authors state that: a) the data contained in the manuscript is original and authentic, so there is no fraud and/or plagiarism derivations (all received manuscripts are subjected to a software to detect plagiarism); b) the manuscript was not submitted for publication in any other printed or electronic vehicle; c) the manuscript content is authors' responsibility, who assume they have contributed significantly to research and must provide retractions or correct mistakes if necessary. In case of doubt, see the Singapore Statement; d) in case of conflicts of interest, they will manifest, which will subsequently be examined by the Editorial Committee; e) when appropriate, the manuscript is derived from a thesis or dissertation.

Studies involving: 1-animal experimentation and/or genetically modified organisms must be approved by the Ethics and Biosafety Committee, mentioning the process number in the paper and a copy of the approval provided by the correspondent responsible Committee of the author's home institution must be forwarded; 2-plants must have the prior registration and deposit of this material (vouchers) in registered collections and accessible to the public, with the inclusion of its identification number on the manuscript; 3-DNA sequences must have the accession number in enabled databases informed in the manuscript; 4- Manuscripts involving interviews and/or questionnaires with human beings must inform the number of the approval opinion in the CEP/Conep System of Plataforma Brasil and attach a copy of the approval opinion.

When submitting the manuscript, authors must also complete and attach the Open Science Compliance Form as a Supplemental File NOT for Review.

Articles can list up to 7 authors and communications must have a maximum of 5 authors. Above that amount, a justification for the number of authors should be included as Supplemental File NOT for Review.

Manuscripts that mention monetary values associated with products and/or services must adopt the US dollar (US $) as the standard currency unit.

After submission has been conducted, modifications to the authorship data, such as the removal or inclusion of coauthors, will not be allowed, being observed, in the publication of the article, the sequence of authors contained in the submission system.

 

 

Form and preparation of manuscripts

 

To be considered for publication, the work must be either a scientific article or scientific communication, although the Editorial Committee will also accept review articles, at its discretion.

Scientific article: consists of the following items: title, name(s) of the author(s), address of the corresponding author and place of origin of the other authors, abstract, keywords, followed by the introduction, materials and methods, results, discussion, conclusions, acknowledgments and references.

Scientific communication: consists of the following items: title, name(s) of the author(s), address of the corresponding author and place of origin of the other authors, abstract, keywords, followed by the text without subdivisions, acknowledgments and references. Scientific publication is a brief report, its publication is immediate as this is a relevant original fact but its content is insufficient for a scientific article.

Review article: consists of the following items: title, name(s) of the author(s), address of the corresponding author and place of origin of the other authors, abstract, keywords, followed by the text without subdivisions, and references.

AIB strongly discourages the submission of multipart manuscripts of the same research.

Presentation: the works must be submitted in Microsoft WORD format (.doc or .docx), page-size A4, margins 2.5 cm, size 12 Times New Roman font, double spaced, with continuous page numbering using the Layout tool in the Page Setup or Page Layout menu item. The maximum number of pages is 25 for review articles, 20 for scientific articles and 10 for scientific communications, including tables and figures.

Manuscript categories: authors should select a category from the following list: Phytopathology, Agricultural Entomology, Agricultural Parasitology, Agricultural Microbiology, Plant Health Defense; Toxicology and Toxic Plants, Animal Epidemiology, Animal Infectious Diseases, Animal Parasitic Diseases, Animal Health (Health Programs), Avian Pathology, Animal Pathological Anatomy, Clinical Animal Pathology, Inspection of Animal Products; Toxicity and Pesticide Residues in Food; Food Quality Assessment and Control; Trace Analysis and Environmental Chemistry, Food Microbiology, Urban Pests.

Language: the paper can be written and submitted in Portuguese or English. After the acceptance, the article submitted in Portuguese should be translated into English.

Title: although brief, the title should tell precisely what the article is about, focusing on its main purpose.

Name (s) and Address (es) of the author(s): should not be included in the manuscript body because Arquivos do Instituto Biológico uses double-blind peer review, except in situations where authors and/or reviewers previously approved the open review. This information should be inserted in the specific field of the online submission system.

Abstract: should concisely present the aim of the work, the materials and methods and conclusions, in a single paragraph. The length must not exceed 250 words.

Keywords: under the abstract and separated by a space, provide at most five keywords separated by commas. Avoid terms that appear in the title.

Introduction: describe the nature and purpose of the work, its relation with other research studies in the context of existing knowledge, along with the reason why this study was conducted.

Material and methods: present a brief description yet sufficient to allow for the repetition of the work. Previously published techniques and processes, except when modified, should be merely cited. Scientific names of species and of drugs should be cited in accordance with international standards.

Results: accompanied by tables and/or figures when necessary. The tables and figures should be inserted after the references.

Discussion: discuss the results obtained, comparing them with those of other published works (results and discussion may be combined within a single section).

Tables and figures: include a clear and concise title that allows the table or figure to be understood without consulting the text. The tables should not contain vertical lines. In the text, use the word Figure and when in parentheses use the abbreviated word (e.g., Fig. 3). The figures must be in the format jpg (photos) or gif (graphics and diagrams) and must be, at least, 300 dpi. The figures should be sent in individual files and named according to the its number, for example Fig1.gif, Fig2.jpg.

Conclusions: presented in their order of importance. They can be given in a separate section or as part of the discussion.

Acknowledgments: these can refer to people and/or institutions who did not provide financial support.

Citations in the text: AIB does not allow authors to cite congress or workshop abstracts, thesis, dissertations or undergraduate thesis. 
Cite only those references that are strictly necessary for understanding the work. It is recommended around 25 references to articles and scientific communications. Citations in the text and references are directly linked. All the authors cited should be included in the references. The citation of authors should be presented in the format of author's last name and the year of the publication, and should be in uppercase, for example: one author ALLAN (1979) or (ALLAN, 1979); two authors – LOPES; MACEDO (1982) or (LOPES; MACEDO, 1982); more than two authors – BESSE et al. (1990) or (BESSE et al., 1990); coincidences of authors or year of publication – (CURI, 1998a), (CURI, 1998b) or (CURI, 1998a, 1998b).

References: the references should be formatted according to NBR 6023/2018, of the Associação Brasileira de Normas Técnicas (ABNT), and be in alphabetical order by the first author. The accuracy of the data in the references is the responsibility of the authors.

Publication fee

 

The publication fee is R$ 80.00 (eighty Brazilian reais) per diagrammed page. After the acceptance of the manuscript, communicated by the editor-in-chief, the authors must deposit the amount corresponding to the publication. A copy of the proof of deposit must be sent by e-mail, mentioning the manuscript ID number, to: arquivos@biologico.sp.gov.br
