Scope and policy

Articles may be written in Portuguese or English. For papers submitted in English, a Portuguese version of the final manuscript will be requested.

The paper submitted to Acta Paulista de Enfermagem and should not have been simultaneously submitted to another journal. The authors are entirely responsible for accuracy of the information and citations. If identified publication or simultaneous submission to another journal, the article will be rejected.

The Acta follows the Code of Conduct and Best Practice Guidelines for Journal Editors.

Open Science Policy

The Acta Paulista de Enfermagem supports the practices related to the open science policy.

By definition:

“Open Science is transparent and accessible knowledge shared and developed through collaborative networks” (VICENTE-SÁEZ; MARTÍNEZ-FUENTES, 2018, p. 7).

“Open Science is the practice of science in such a way that others can collaborate and contribute, where research data, laboratory notes and other research processes are freely available under terms that allow for the reuse, redistribution and reproduction of research and its underlying data and methods” (FOSTER, 2019, p. 10).

Preprints:

The Acta Paulista de Enfermagem accepts manuscripts that have been deposited on a non-commercial preprint server, as long as they have not been submitted for peer review in another journal simultaneously. Preprint is a manuscript that is publicly available in open access on a website called preprint server before publication in the scientific journal. This is an option for authors quickly and formally communicating their research before or in parallel submission to the Acta journal for evaluation and publication when approved.

The author responsible for submission must inform in the Title Page if the manuscript is deposited in a preprint server and provide the corresponding DOI that will be published in the manuscript, if accepted for publication in the Acta Paulista de Enfermagem.

On submission, the Acta requests authors to complete the (link to Open Science Compliance Form), ‘supplemental files for review’ option.

The Acta journal reiterates that all manuscripts submitted from a preprint repository will be mandatorily peer-reviewed.

Note that submitted manuscripts cannot contain references to articles that have not been published in scientific journals and have fully complied with the peer review process.

Manuscripts evaluation

The platform for online submission of Acta Paulista Nursing is denominated ScholarOne, which is a complete system of workflow management for scientific journals, which manages the submission, peer review, production and publishing process more efficiently providing intelligent information to help make strategic decisions.

The editorial office receives and gives all the presented documentation through the online submission. The cases of non-compliance are returned to the corresponding author for appropriateness.

The editorial office sends to the editor-in-chief the manuscripts that follow the instructions for authors for her first editorial decision, which can be: continue the evaluation process, request a revision, or reject the manuscript. If, at the discretion of the editor-in-chief, the manuscript content is current and contributes to knowledge, but requires a revision, the manuscript is returned to the authors with a deadline for them to submit a new version.

Manuscripts will continue in the evaluation process are forwarded to the platform of submission to one of the associate editors. After evaluation of the manuscript the editor may suggest rejection or, if necessary, ad hoc consultants to indicate the area of the article to the analysis.

After receiving the analysis of ad hoc consultants, the associate publisher issues a critical appraisal based on the advice of consultants and recommend the acception or minor corrections or rejection of the manuscript to the chief editor.

The editor-in-chief takes the editorial decision and manuscripts recommended for publication by the associate editors are sent for analysis by the technical editor. Depending on her opinion, the editor-in-chief makes the final editorial decision, sends the manuscript to the corresponding author and asks its certified translation into English or Portuguese within seven days.

The Act presents certified translators who, in addition to technical competence, have nurses in their body of translators providing the certificate of translation, without which the article can not be published, as for The Portuguese language.

Accepted manuscripts for publication are now known as articles and get into editorial production.

When your article is accepted and is in production process: You can celebrate!

Articles accepted undergo to production, being edited and typeset.

3.1 Title

Title of manuscript [must be written] in English or Portuguese (≤ 12 words; Sentence case, UClc, not UC).

The title is the most read and circulated of a text and aims to inform the article content. Must be clear, accurate and attractive. Information that enable electronic retrieval sensitive and specific article must be included in the title. Therefore use the scpecific core descriptor as frasal core.

The title should not contain: abbreviations, formulas, excessive adjectives, cities, symbols, dates, slang, inaccuracies and dubious words, meaning obscure and superfluous words (considerations, contribution to the study, contribution to knowledge, study, research of, subsidies, etc...).

3.2 Abstract

According to the Houaiss Dictionary, abstract is a short presentation of a text. Should provide the context or background for the study, basic procedures, main findings, conclusions, in order to emphasize new and important aspects of the study. It is the most read in the scientific paper after the title. The purpose of the abstract is to facilitate the communication with the reader.

Prepare the abstract in the language of your manuscript with a maximum of 250 words and structured as follows:

  • Objective: establish the main question and/or hypotheses to be tested.
  • Methods: describe the study design, population and basic procedures.
  • Results: describe the principal result in a concise sentence. It should be as descriptive as possible. Levels of statistical significance and confidence intervals only when appropriate.
  • Conclusion: simple and straightforward sentence in response to the objective and based exclusively on the presented results in the summary.
  • Five Health Sciences descriptors, which can best represent the study, must be selected consulting DECS (list of descriptors used in the LILACS Database of BIREME). The Nursing Thesaurus of the International Nursing Index may be consulted as additional list when necessary or MeSH Keywords.

3.3 Body of manuscript

Acta joined the ICMJE and EQUATOR network initiatives to improve presentation of study results, not only to an increase in potential publication but also for international dissemination of articles. Therefore, the following international guides must be used:

Studies or trials

Statements

Randomized clinical trial

CONSORT

Systematic reviews and meta-analyzes

PRISMA

Observational studies in epidemiology

STROBE

Qualitative studies*

COREQ*

*Consolidated criteria for reporting qualitative research (COREQ): a 32-item checklist for interviews and focus groups (published in the Int. Journal for Quality in Health Care, 2007).

The manuscript text should contain separate paragraphs with Introduction, Methods, Results, Discussion, Conclusion, Acknowledgements and References. Follow the standards of publishing of Acta. Link.

  • The introduction should presents the theoretical framework of the study object. The aim of introduction is to state the justifications and explanations, the originality and validity, purpose and applicability of the contribution to required knowledge. No more than four quotes must be used to support a single idea. Avoid the personal quote communications and unpublished materials. The objective should be in the last paragraph of the introduction. Remember that for every objective there should be a conclusion.
  • Methods: describes how the study was conducted and indicates the author's logic in the ordering of procedures and techniques used to obtain the results (the same order should be followed in the following sections). This section must be structured in (1) type of study design, place, and population (explaining the criteria for selection (inclusion and exclusion), (2) calculation of sample size, (3) measuring instruments (with information on their validity and reliability), (4) data collection and analysis (the statistical method and mathematical criterion for data significance must be declared).
  • Results - description of obtained in the survey, researcher exclusive, without citations, comments or personal interpretations (subjective).
  • Tables, Graphs and Figures, at most three, necessarily, must be inserted in the text of the article, always in original format. Use these resources when they express more than can be done by words in the same amount of space. Check the standards of publishing of Acta.
  • Discussion - a critical appraisal is presented with new and important aspects of the study and an explanation about the meaning of these results and its limitations, relating it to other studies. The critic language an past verbal tense must be used. The central part of the discussion is the results interpretation and its relationship with existing knowledge in order to achieve a conclusion. The discussion begins by explaining the limits of the results, as the limit is given by the chosen method. In the second paragraph stating the contribution of the results of this study and practical applicability for nurses.
  • Conclusion - written in a clear sentence, simple and straightforward showing compliance with the proposed objective. In case of more than one objective, there must be a conclusion for each one. No other comment should be included in the conclusion.
  • References - from scientific journals indexed in international databases, with a direct and relevant connection to the study subject (and consulted in full by the author), should be cited. References of printed and/or electronic documents must follow the Vancouver style, which was defined by the International Committee of Medical Journal Editors. Presentation of references must be made with normal (neither bold, nor italic, nor underlined) fonts, alignment with the left margin, and numbered in the same order as that of citations in the manuscript. Titles of articles must be translated into English (within square brackets) indicating the language of the text at the end of the reference. Titles of journals should be abbreviated according to the List of Journals Indexed in Index Medicus and International Nursing Index. The maximum number of 35 updated references (less than five years and indexed in international databases) should not be exceeded. Always consider currentness of any reference, because citation of recent studies in original articles is essential. References that cannot be recovered in the original language by the reader, support material (dictionaries, statistics, laws, annals, etc), inaccessible sources (such as handouts, personal stuff, etc), or works of low scientific expression will not be published. Please, carefully check your references, as they contribute to convincing the reader of the validity of the facts and arguments in the article text.
    • Citations in the text (Ref.: Acta guidelines for manuscript preparation);
    • Title: ≤ 12 words;
    • Authorship: ≤ 8 authors (including institutions);
