ABOUT THIS JOURNAL

Basic information

Ambiente & Sociedade is published twice a year by researchers from several academic institutions that are specialized in the title-theme. It publishes scientific work from international and national collaborators, upon revision made by peer reviewers.

History

In June of 1995, during meeting of the Work Group of Ecology and Society of ANPOCS (National Association of Graduate Work and Research in Social Sciences) held in Campinas, state of São Paulo, participants concluded the need to institutionalize results and findings from the field regarding issues on environment and social sciences. To do so, mechanisms to publish scientific production and to create an institutional forum for discussion were necessary. The first step was to begin an elaboration of a scientific journal and it became formalized by the formation of an Editorial Committee that took the initiative to face such an endeavor. By that time, publications had an inter-disciplinary and inter-institutional approach, without rigid institutional attachments in order to highlight its collective feature. Despite importance of the wide-ranging strategy, it became a barrier to achieve its goal, including scarce financial aids within academia.

Subscriptions from people and institutions linked directly to the project's idea and an excellent Editorial Committee--researchers from Unicamp, Usp, and Ufsc-helped to overcome initial difficulty. The Center for Study and Research in Environment (NEPAM) of Unicamp took charge of logistic and partly financial support, as well as gather together talent individuals all collaborated to conduct an ambitious and innovative project within academic environment.

Logistic and institutional support made possible the establishment of profitable and long-term network with universities and research centers in Brazil and abroad, spreading the project and adding more partners up. High-quality articles elaborated by professionals from different fields, articles published in well-known international journals with previous copyright permission to translate and publish contributed to come up with the first issues of this journal. After a number of discussions and suggestions, in 1997, the current name took place, Ambiente & Sociedade.

Since the first issue, this journal is indexed in the ISSN, and more recently it has been accepted to be part of important international databases, such as International Bibliography of the Social Sciences (IBSS) and the All-Russian Institute of Scientific and Technical Information.

Throughout this period, the journal acquired a number of readers and collaborators, and the number of subscriptions increased rapidly: it reached approximately 300. Researchers and institutions responded pleasingly.

By 2000, the process of institutionalization of Ambiente & Sociedade was fully accomplished, undoubtedly due to previous successful steps: creation of the National Association of Graduate Study and Research in Environment and Society (ANPPAS). The first meeting of ANPPAS occurred in November of 2000, Indaiatuba city, state of São Paulo. In this meeting, it was decided that Ambiente & Sociedade journal would rescue its first goal, being the main channel of dissemination of ANPPAS.

Despite initial difficulties, although expected and predicted, acknowledgements received within and outside study field, means that Ambiente & Sociedade and ANPPAS have fulfilled an institutional gap and it will surely produce an upcoming positive impact on the intellectual production among the Brazilian scientific community.

Its abbreviated title is Ambient. soc., and it should be used in bibliographies, footnotes, references and bibliographic strips.
