About the journal

Brief History

The journal BBR – Brazilian Business Review was created in 2004 and is entirely conceived in a digital environment.

In 2006, the journal BBR – Brazilian Business Review has been registered in the Latindex- Regional Information System for Scientific Journals of Latin America, the Caribbean, Spain and Portugal. Subsequently, BBR became part of the EBSCO Publishing located in Birmingham, Alabama, USA. This is an important step towards the consolidation of BBR – Brazilian Business Review as an international scientific journal.

In 2007, the journal BBR- Brazilian Business Review was classified as NATIONAL A by Qualis/CAPES. Qualis is the result of the process of classifying the vehicles used by graduate programs to disseminate the intellectual production of their professors and students, according to CAPES.

In 2008, with the change in  the Qualis/CAPES classification criteria, the BBR journal has a new classification, B2.

In 2013, the journal BBR – Brazilian Business Review, became part of theSpell– Scientific Periodicals Electronic Library, which is a system for indexing, searching and making available free of charge scientific production and RePEc- Research Papers in Economics, a bibliographic database dedicated to Economics and related disciplines.

In 2015, the new Qualis/CAPES classification  evaluated the BBR journal  as  one of the main national journals in the area, reevaluating it as B1.

In 2017, the journal was classified as stratum A2 by  the Qualis/CAPES evaluation, the second highest level of general evaluation and the highest currently achieved among Brazilian academic journals. In the same year, the journal was indexed by SciELO.

In 2018, BBR was selected by the Content Selection & Advisory Board for inclusion in Scopus.

As  of volume 21 of 2024, BBR will adopt the rolling pass system, making the publication of the article faster.

The abbreviated title of the journal is BBR, which should be used in bibliographies, footnotes, references, and bibliographic legends.

Open Science Compliance

The Open Science movement  proposes guidelines for collaborative, shared, and public scientific practice. In line with the Open Science guidelines, BBR adopts a series of practices, such as the open access policy, the ethics manual for editors. In addition, it requires precise indication

of the role of each of the authors in articles with multiple authorship, encourages the sharing of analysis datasets, instruments, statistical analysis scripts, scripts and additional materials, available at Open online repositories, such as Zenodo, Figshare and OSF, if they cannot be published in the work itself, and this information must be indicated in the manuscript. As a result, articles that communicate research should indicate and reference the availability of the contents underlying the elaboration of the research and the results obtained.

The BBR encourages the publication of preprint articles on public platforms, such as Preprints, SciELO Preprints and EmeRI, so that, where appropriate, they can be discussed openly, before being published.

Also in line with open science practices, the journal offers authors and reviewers options to open the peer review process, with or without identification of their names. Authorization for the disclosure of the name may be given by the authors at the time of submission of the article and by the evaluators when filling out the Form on Compliance with Open Science.

In case of publication of the evaluations that supported the decision to publish the article, they may be edited by the editorial board of the journal.

The contribution of the section editors is duly credited in the published article. The evaluators receive a statement of the manuscript's opinion and can also validate the activity in the Publons.

EDITORIAL POLICY

Preprints

BBR encourages the publication of preprint articles on public platforms such as Preprints, SciELO Preprints and EmeRI, allowing for open discussions prior to publication. In the case of Preprints, it is relevant to note that BBR does not consider that this compromises the originality of the submitted article. The BBR journal follows the updates of the principles of Open Science and accepts the submission of articles previously published in preprint repositories, without harming their originality.

Peer review process

The purpose of the evaluation is to help authors improve the quality of their work by providing constructive and timely evaluations prepared by experienced academics from renowned institutions in the field of business. Often these academics are collaborators of institutions other than FUCAPE Business School. BBR considers the evaluation process to be a fundamental step for the improvement of articles. For this reason, BBR evaluators are encouraged to present, in addition to the opinion on the publication, suggestions for improvement regarding the content and form of the text.

The article  submitted to BBR must be original and unpublished, that is, it cannot have been or be submitted to another journal, in Brazil or abroad. Submissions will undergo a plagiarism check using the Turnitin platform. Papers published in annals of scientific meetings, such as congresses, seminars, symposia, etc., are considered unpublished. Therefore, BBR encourages authors of these papers, regardless of their affiliation, to format them in the standard of articles and submit them for evaluation.

All articles are published in both Portuguese and English. For articles submitted from 2017 onwards, it will be up to the authors to provide the version in the other language within 2 months after the approval of the article. Failure to submit the translated version within this deadline implies the retraction of the article's approval. Approved articles in English, submitted from April 2018 onwards  by non-Portuguese-speaking authors, will have their translation into Portuguese provided by BBR free of charge.

The evaluation process of articles submitted to the BBR consists of two stages. The first is a preliminary evaluation by the Editor, Co-Editor and Deputy Editors, who examine the suitability of the work to the journal's editorial line and make the Desk Review evaluation. The second stage consists of the evaluation itself, in the double blind review system, and is carried out by two ad hoc consultants.

The evaluation considers, primarily, the scientific quality of the text, focusing on the following aspects:

  • Topicality of the topic
  • Originality of the work
  • Relevance and theoretical consistency of the text for the development of the area of knowledge
  • Quality of the theoretical framework used
  • Quality of writing and organization of the text
  • Contribution of the work to the knowledge of the area in which the article is inserted
  • Methodology used: suitability and quality
  • Quality of data analysis and discussion (if applicable)
  • Conclusions: achievement, rationale and coherence.

The result of the evaluation will be sent to the first author of the work, by e-mail.

A total period of 90 days is estimated from the acceptance of the Desk Review to the first opinion on the article;

In line with Open Science communication practices, the journal now adopts in its editorial policy, the opening of the peer review process in agreement with the reviewer.

In addition, authors may choose one or more means of opening  the peer review process offered by the journal, as  well as authors may agree to interact directly with reviewers responsible for evaluating the manuscript, when offered the option.

The reviewers, through an opinion written in the ScholarOne system, will recommend one of three options:

1. Full acceptance without modifications

2. Partial Acceptance with Modifications

3. Rejection of the manuscript

Once approved, the article undergoes spelling and grammar review before publication.

Open Data

The BBR encourages the sharing of the analysis datasets, instruments, statistical analysis scripts, roadmaps, and additional materials, made available at Open online repositories, such as Zenodo, Figshare and OSF, if they cannot be published in the work itself, and this information must be indicated in the manuscript. As a result, articles that communicate research should indicate and reference the availability of the contents underlying the elaboration of the research and the results obtained.

Fee Collection

BBR: Brazilian Business Review does not charge any fee (APC) for published texts or for those submitted for evaluation, review, publication, distribution or download. The publication is completely free and open access.

Ethics and Misconduct Policy, Erratum and Retraction

BBR: Brazilian Business Review is committed to defending the integrity of the literature and publishes Errata, Expressions of Concerns or Notices of Retraction dependent on the situation and in accordance with the COPE Guidelines for Retraction.

The retraction mechanism follows the Publication Ethics Committee (COPE) Retraction Guidelines, which can be accessed at COPE - Retraction Guidelines.

Conflict of Interest Policy

They should be communicated not only by the authors, but by everyone involved in the editorial process of a manuscript.

Editors should avoid making decisions about manuscripts that conflict with their own interests, such as those submitted by authors in their department or research collaborators.

Considering the possibility of conflicts of interest, the journal does not publish articles authored by the journal's own editors, as well as by Publisher professors.

If deputy editors have a conflict of interest, they should delegate decision-making to other editors.

Reviewers should consider any type of conflict of interest before evaluating the manuscript. Working relationships with the author should be considered (e.g., participating or having participated in a research project; maintaining or having maintained scientific collaboration with research groups; having an orientation relationship with the author; having a financial interest in the project involved in the manuscript).

Access to the Conflict of Interest form: Declaration

Adoption of Similarity Checking Software

As part of the actions to value academic integrity and prevent plagiarism in the publications accredited on the portal, the BBR, adopts the service of identifying similarity of texts based on the Turnitin implemented at the University since 2017.

All manuscripts are checked upon receipt of the first revision of the articles.

Sex and Gender Issues

BBR's editorial team, in addition to the authors who publish in the journal, must always observe the guidelines on Sex and Gender Equity in Research (SAGER). The SAGER guidelines comprise a set of guidelines that guide the reporting of sex and gender information in study design, data analysis, and results and interpretation of findings. In addition, BBR observes the policy of gender equality in the formation of its editorial board.

Ethics Committee

When the article or research article involves procedures with human beings, or sensitive data with the LGPD, authors must attach a statement of approval from the ethics committee of the institution responsible for approving the research.

  • Justified alignment
  • Margins: top and left: 3 cm, bottom and right: 2 cm
  • Number of words, including title, abstract, text, references and illustrations: between 6,000 and 8,000 words for theoretical-empirical articles
  • The American Psychological Association (APA), 7th edition, standards for formatting citations and references should be adopted. • Illustrations, such as figures, charts, and tables, should be prepared according to the style recommendations of the American Psychological Association (APA), 7th edition, always in black and white, along with captions, credits, font, and notes (when applicable). If there are illustrations imported from other programs, such as Excel and PowerPoint, send the source file as well. Purdue University's Online Writing Laboratory (OWL) provides examples.
  • Reference and explanatory notes should be avoided. Strictly necessary notes should be numbered sequentially in the body of the text and inserted at the end of the text, before references

The number of authors of articles is limited to four.

The article must be submitted in a file containing the text of the article itself, with the characteristics described below. The first page should contain: a. title of the article (in Portuguese and in English); b. abstract, containing between 120 and 160 words; c. between three and five keywords. From the second page should come the body of the article.

To ensure the anonymity of the evaluation process, the author(s) should not identify themselves in the body of the article. ScholarOne allows authors to nominate potential reviewers for their paper. However, there is no guarantee that the appointed reviewers will be allocated to review the work.

The article should contain, whenever possible: a. objectives; b. literature review; c. methodology; d. results and discussion; e. conclusions, limitations, recommendations of an academic and practical nature; f. references; and G. Appendices and Annexes. If applicable, the ethical procedures adopted in the research should be described in the last paragraph of the Methodology section, mentioning the protocol number for approval by the Research Ethics Committee.

Summary

An abstract usually appears separate from the article, so it should be independent. At a minimum, the abstract should clearly and briefly state the objective of the research, the main results and the main contributions. References should be avoided, but if necessary, you can cite authors and years. Non-standard acronyms and unusual abbreviations should also be avoided, but if essential, they should be defined in the abstract itself.

Introduction

The introduction should emphasize the incremental contribution of your research. Keep the use of citations to a minimum, using only what is strictly necessary to motivate research, and highlight and clarify your findings and contributions. The introduction should not contain a paragraph listing the sections of the article. Its introduction must expose (a) objective, (b) motivation, (c) methods, (d) results and (e) research contributions, in a clear and succinct manner. Lack of any of these elements makes your paper have a very high chance of failing, as your introduction will fail to answer three fundamental questions (Grant & Pollock, 2011):

(1) Who cares? What is your research about? How is it useful, why is it important?

(2) What we know, what we don't know, so what? What has been found so far, what hasn't been found yet? How does your research fit into this context?

(3) What have we learned? What does your research bring? How does it advance our knowledge?

Methodology

The methodology section should be clear enough to allow for replication of the research. The research design should be described in detail, explaining the methodological choices you have made and why. If the survey has statistical analyses, please note the following item.

Statistical analysis (if applicable)

All statistical methods should be described in sufficient detail to allow a properly trained reader with access to your data to cross-check your results.

Any processing of the data, such as transformations, recoding, re-scaling, normalization, truncation, winsorization, removal or modification of values must be openly disclosed and justified. Units of measurement should be provided for all variables.

Authors should provide a complete and transparent view of the results, so that the conclusions are supported by appropriate statistical analyses and the limitations of the study are clearly discussed.

Authors' Contributions

BBR adopts the CRediT (Contributor Roles Taxonomy) taxonomy to accurately identify the contributions of each author in our publications. This helps us to assign proper credit to each of the authors with transparency. For more information about the CRediT system, visit the official website: https://credit.niso.org/.

After the references, a sentence should be included, in which the authors declare whether there is a conflict of interest, in addition to indicating the contribution of each author to the research.

Additional Information

ORCID:

As a way of standardizing authorship, the BBR Committee made it mandatory to include the ORCID iD at the time of submission. After the first analysis, before forwarding for evaluation, manuscripts that do not have the ORCID informed in the system will be notified for the inclusion of the identifier record, and must contain at the time of registration, information about academic training.

The ORCID identifier can be obtained free of charge at: https://orcid.org/register

You must accept the ORCID submission standards, and include the full URL, accompanied by the phrase "https://" (e.g., https://orcid.org/0000-0002-1825-0097), or sign in to be automatically registered for connection through ORCID.

ORCID registration of all authors is required. On the platform you can enter directly with the ORCID connection, thus allowing your connection validated by the system. At the time of submission, the author must click on authorization for the other authors to validate their registration via the link forwarded.

Submission Platform

Articles must be submitted to the BBR through the ScholarOne.

Online Registration

All articles published in our journal have a  unique DOI (Digital Object Identifier), serving as an individual identifier that ensures their identification and guarantees perpetual accessibility on the internet.

To ensure accuracy and facilitate the search of our articles, BBR assigns a unique DOI for each language in which they are published. Therefore, an article written in Portuguese or English will have its distinct DOI, making it easier for researchers, academics, and practitioners from around the world to locate and cite our articles accurately and efficiently.

By adopting the DOI registration system, BBR reinforces its commitment to promoting the spread of knowledge and international academic collaboration. We are committed to facilitating access and ensuring accurate citation of published articles, contributing to the progress of scientific research and development in various areas, such as administration, business, and economics.
