The Brazilian Journal of Genetics - ISSN 0100-8455 - (which parallel title is Revista Brasileira de Genética) was published by the Sociedade Brasileira de Genética (Brazilian Genetics Society) from 1978 to 1997 , vol. 1 to vol. 20.

In 1998, the journal changes its title to Genetics and Molecular Biology - ISSN 1415-4757, but continues the sequence of numbering, therefore starting on March 1998, vol. 21, issue 1.

The objective of the Brazilian Journal of Genetics is to publish the results of original research in evolution and genetics and their application to the improvement of plants, animals and human well-being.

Review articles will also be published occasionally, by invitation.

Its recommended short title is Braz. J. Genet., that should be used in bibliographies, footnotes and bibliographical references and strips.

The Brazilian Journal of Genetics is abstracted or indexed in:
