Scope and policy

Ciência Animal Brasileira is published four times per year by the Vetrinary and Animal Science School of Universidade Federal de Goiás. Its mission is to publish original research articles (full papers) concerning Veterinary Medicine, Animal Science, Biology as well as related subjects. Case reports and short communications are no longer accepted. Review articles are only accepted through Editorial Board invitation. The papers submitted to this journal are, firstly, evaluated by the editorial board. In case of approval, they are sent to peer review (by means of double-blind evaluation keeping secrecy of authors´ identities). If the paper is accepted it follows to final review by the scientific editors, language revising and text formatting. If the paper is refused it is filed and returned to the author. Accepted papers are granted to Ciência Animal Brasileira, licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution License. The authors are responsible for the concepts and information content of the paper, which must be original, unpublished and submitted exclusively to this journal. Its abbreviated title is Ciênc. anim. bras., which should be utilized in bibliographies, footnotes, references and bibliographic references.

The papers submitted to the journal are, firstly, evaluated by the editorial board. In case of approval, they are judged by two PhD reviewers, known by their knowledge concerning the subject. When the evaluation results are contradictory, the paper is sent to a third reviewer to reach a consensus. During this process, the authors´ identities will not be revealed.

This journal uses LOCKSS system to create a file system that is distributed among participating libraries, allowing them to create permanent files of the journals for preservation and restoration.

For more information on ethics in publishing and ethical guidelines for journal publication see, and

The work described in your paper must have been carried out in accordance with the law that establishes the procedures for the scientific use of animals and states the necessity of submitting research proposals to the Ethics Committee of the institution (Lei 11.794/08) (

For more information, see (CONCEA) and (COBEA) (

This must be stated at an appropriate point in the article.

All authors are requested to disclose any actual or potential conflict of interest including any financial and personal relationships with other people, organizations or institutions that could inappropriately influence, or be perceived to influence, their work. Furthermore, any posterior conflict involving the need of mandatory reporting of diseases or possible hazards to the exportation of animal-origin products must be disclosed.

Submission of a paper implies that the work described has not been published previously, that it is not under consideration for publication elsewhere, that its publication is approved by all authors and tacitly or explicitly by the responsible authorities where the work was carried out, and that, if accepted, it will not be published elsewhere without the written consent of the copyright-holder.

This policy concerns the addition, deletion, or rearrangement of author names in the authorship of accepted manuscripts. Before the accepted manuscript is published requests to change authorship must be sent to the journal manager and must include: (a) the reason the name should be added or removed, or the author names rearranged and (b) written confirmation (e-mail or fax) from all authors that they agree with the addition, removal or rearrangement. In the case of addition or removal of authors, this includes confirmation from the author being added or removed. Requests will be sent to the journal editors and publication of the accepted manuscript is suspended until authorship has been agreed.

After the accepted manuscript is published requests to add, delete, or rearrange author names will follow the same policies as noted above and result in a corrigendum.

Authors are requested to identify who provided financial support for the conduct of the research and/or preparation of the paper and to briefly describe the role of the sponsor(s), if any, in study design; in the collection, analysis and interpretation of data; in the writing of the report; and in the decision to submit the paper for publication.

Form and preparation of manuscripts

Currently, submissions are accepted for manuscripts written in Portuguese and English. The authors´ full names as well as their institutional affiliation must be inserted in the appropriate fields on the submission page. This information must not appear in the manuscript. Ciência Animal Brasileira suggests that papers should be written by no more than six authors. Papers written by more than six authors will be considered exception and evaluated by the Editorial Board and, if necessary, correction will be requested. The denial of such request may lead to refusal of publication. The journal also suggests that papers should be presented within 20 pages, and figures, graphics and tables should be displayed in the body of the text, where they are mentioned. It is important to emphasize that research with animals should be approved by the Ethics Committee of the institution where the study was carried out. The absence of approval impedes the publishing of the paper.

Manuscripts in Portuguese should be organized as follows:

Title in Portuguese: Times New Roman font at 14 points, uppercase letters, in bold and centered;

Abstract in Portuguese (Resumo): Times New Roman font at 11 points, space 1, justified alignment, with up to 200 characters;

Keywords in Portuguese (palavras-chave): similar to abstract with up to five words not present in the title;

Title in English (mandatory): Times New Roman font at 12 points, uppercase letters, in bold and centered;

Abstract in English (not Summary): Times New Roman font at 11 points, space 1, justified alignment, with up to 200 characters;

Keywords: similar to keywords in Portuguese.

Papers should be divided into sections in the following order:

Introduction (up to 3000 digits);
Material and Methods (subheadings are not accepted);
Results and Discussion;
Acknowledgments (optional);
References (not bibliography).

The text should be typed by using Times New Roman font at 12 points, space 1.5 and justified alignment, except for References, which should be set in Times New Roman font at 11 points, space 1, with six points above and below the paragraph, without indentation.

References should be numbered in the order in which they appear in the text. The full list of references, at the end of the article, must follow Vancouver style (complete; concise

Manuscripts submitted in English should present the same format and sections as follows:

Title in English;
Abstract in English;
Title in Portuguese (mandatory);
Abstract in Portuguse (Resumo, mandatory);
Keywords in Portuguese (Palavras-chave, mandatory);
Material and Methods;
Results and Discussion;
Conclusions; Acknowledges (optional);

Short communications and case reports are no longer accepted for submission. Reviews will only be published in cases of peer-refereed invitation by the Editorial Board.

Using simple or extended abstracts as well as full papers published on annals as reference may be difficult for recovery; therefore, we request that this kind of material must not be used as reference.

Likewise, theses and dissertations should also be avoided. If their use is necessary, we request that only documents from the last three years are cited. The webpage where it can be found must be indicated, especially because this kind of document can be found in university databases under .pdf format.

Furthermore, we recommend the use of papers as reference instead of textbooks, besides prioritizing references up to five years of publishing.

The Scientific Editor may request information regarding the references by the time of editing the paper. A prompt response may fasten the publication process. The easy recovery of information is the key point of bibliographic, technical and electronic references.
