|Ciência da Informação is a journal published
three times a year by the Brazilian Institute for Information in Science
and Technology IBICT,
organ of the National Council of Scientific and Technological Development
CNPq of the Ministry of Science and Technology MCT.
From the release of its first issue in 1972 up to 1975, the journal was published by the Brazilian Institute of Bibliography and Documentation IBBD, having kept the half-yearly periodicity till 1991.
Ciência da Informação has been maintaining a distinguished performance in the field of information science and in the segment of science and technology information, owing to the issuance of national and foreign specialists' significant contributions, as well as to its wide-ranging audience, constituted of the academic community, researchers and professionals not only from the information science field, but also from correlated areas.
The journal is devoted to the publication of original works related to information science, or works that present the results of studies and researches concerning the activities of the segment of science and technology information, either bibliographical and non-bibliographical.
In that context, information science is understood as an interdisciplinary area by nature, with investigative and analytic purposes, which objective is the study of the phenomena correlated to the production, organization, diffusion and use of information in all the fields of knowledge. The activities of the segment of information are considered as those developed by public and private institutions as a whole, and related to the process comprising the generation, analysis, preparation, diffusion and use of knowledge and communicable data in the field of science and technique.
The segment includes, therefore, components of several other sectors, as the ones of the education, culture and research, publishing industry, mass communication industry in its aspects related to the communication and popularization of the science, computer science industry, reprography and micrograph industry, telecommunication and informatics.
The journal's abbreviated title is Ci. Inf., the form that should be used in bibliographies, footnotes, and bibliographical references and strips.
