General guidelines

Cadernos de Pesquisa (CP) publishes original works directly or indirectly related to education, including subjects such as public policies, evaluation, labor, family, socialization of children, ethnical and gender issues etc. Texts should not be published anywhere else before six months after their publication in CP.

Authors are requested to send their full name, corresponding address, telephone number, and, whenever possible, their fax number and e-mail address for contact; the latter will appear in the author’s credits.

Authors of published texts will receive up to five complimentary copies of the issue in which their article appears.

Manuscripts are blind refereed by experts in the appropriate field and by the editorial committee. Authors receive communications on the referees’ assessments. The editorial committee has the right to refuse an article if the authors do not satisfactorily implement the modifications requested by the referees.

The journal may introduce minor changes in the form of a text accepted for publication.

Submission of manuscripts

Contents – Texts submitted for publication in CP must be original, and should fit into one of the journal’s categories:

Articles: synthesis of original research; results of theoretical work; critical review of a specific bibliographical subject.

Issues under Discussion: essay-like article with author’s opinion on issues under current debate or proposed for debate.

This section accepts responses to previously published texts, edited versions of published communications, edited versions of communications made in meetings, and articles that, supported by original research, limit themselves to defend a given position in the academic debate or wish to discuss proposals for public policies;

Experience Reports: descriptions of an individual or collective experience apprehended from a specific intervention, taking into account it’s theory/practice counterpoint and giving precise indication of the conditions under which it has occurred;

Reviews: only for recent publications, national or foreign;

Editorial Highlight: note drawing attention to a published work, with brief indication of its contents and/or relevance.

Foreign texts must be previously unpublished in Brazil.

Length, title page, abstracts, titles, and subtitles – Two copies of the manuscripts should be submitted, along with a diskette containing the complete text (including tables, etc) in Windows (Word 97) compatible format. The length of the text should not exceed 25 pages formatted as follows: 3cm top margin, 3cm bottom margin, 3cm left margin, 2cm right margin; line spacing of 1.5 lines; size 13 Times New Roman font should be used for the main body of the text.

Reviews should not be more than six pages long. For a Editorial Highlight, the maximum length is two pages.

The title page contains the complete title of the article, the authors’ names, and their complete affiliation, as well as the unit of reference to which they belong, in order to make easier to locate them. The source of the text, if applicable, should be provided. The first page of the manuscript should contain the title of the text but not the authors’ name and affiliation to guarantee blind refereeing.

Except for Reviews and Editorial Highlights, all manuscripts must include abstracts in Portuguese and English with a maximum of 15 lines of text each. At the end of each abstract, a maximum of four keywords (descriptors) should be supplied in Portuguese and English. An English version for the title must be included in the abstract.

Titles should be no longer than 11 words (including articles, prepositions, conjunctions, etc), and subtitles should be concise and clearly indicated.

Quotations, references, and notes – Short quotations should be incorporated into the text, between quotation marks, followed by the author’s surname and year of publication between brackets. If the quotation takes three or more lines, the brackets should also include page numbers preceded by p.

Bibliographical references without a corresponding quotation should also be made within the text, between brackets (not as footnotes). For example: According to Fonseca (1986, p. 57-8)…; …in a study carried out in Recife (Unicef, 1986)…

Notes should appear as sequentially numbered footnotes.

When first mentioned in the text, acronyms and abbreviations must be followed by the words they stand for.

List of References – A complete list of bibliographical references should appear at the end of the text, presented in alphabetical order by author’s surname and the initials of his name. Formatting should follow ABNT standards (NBR 6023, August 2002). Some examples are shown:

SURNAME, N. Title: subtitle. Place: Publisher, Year. (Collection)

SURNAME, N. Title of chapter. In: SURNAME, N. Title of book. Place: Publisher, Year. p.

SURNAME, N. Title of work. Publisher, Year. Title of chapter. p.

SURNAME, N. Title of article. Periodical, Place, v. , n. , p. , month abbreviation, Year.

SURNAME, N.. Title: subtitle. Place, Year. Available at: <complete Internet address>. Accessed on: Day/Month/Year.

Tables, graphs, diagrams, figures – Should be sent in separate sheets of paper and numbered in Arabic numerals. Their size should allow maximum clarity of reading, and their titles, captions, and headlines should be consistently formatted. Indication of source should follow the same format of a bibliographical reference – author and year – without brackets.

The approximate position of these elements should be indicated in the main body of the text. Please, note that insertion points may be adjusted due to layout restrictions.

Reply policy

The journal welcomes texts commenting articles it has previously published, as well as the author’s reply to such comments. Both are subjected to the same refereeing process of a regular manuscript. If a commentary is accepted for publication, the journal shall offer the same space for the author’s reply, either in the same or in the subsequent issue. Comments and replies to Reviews or Editorial Highlights are not accepted.
