General guidelines

Cadernos de Pesquisa, is a quarterly scientific journal that publishes academic findings that are directly or indirectly related to education, including innovative work relating to research, essays and other types of texts. The journal broadly addresses the field of education, contributing to the subject of educational studies that involve matters related to gender issues, racial relations, childhood, youth, school, work, family, social policies in an interdisciplinary manner. The broad scope encompasses different areas within the field of the humanities, from various theoretical and methodological perspectives, allowing for the exchange of information and discussion on the main issues in these fields.

The journal's priority is the publication of empirical historical and/or documentary research, in particular that which is conducted in Brazil, although there is space for texts from abroad. It also welcomes essays concerning theoretical and methodological contributions, and makes texts written by recognized international authors available to the Brazilian reader, who may cite studies in the field, translated into Portuguese or Spanish.

The journal publishes texts in Portuguese and Spanish, and makes English versions available, or, in the case of a translation, in the original language of the article on the SEER/ojs platform, on the SciELO and Educ@ site, containing articles selected by the Editorial Board for each issue.

The material must be original and with exclusive submission to Cadernos de Pesquisa. Accepted papers must not be published elsewhere for six months after its publication in the journal. For permission to reproduce the text into another outlet, consult

To submit an article Cadernos de Pesquisa, it is necessary to:

  • Register in the system - click here to subscribe (login and password are required to access the system).
  • Confirm that the text is original and unpublished, and has not been submitted for publication in another journal.
  • Forward two versions of the article: one for evaluation, in PDF format, with no information that identifies authorship; and another, in Microsoft Word, with all information.

Ideally, if the article is co-authored, all authors should be registered in the system. However, it is possible to submit the text with only one registered author. In both cases, the person who submits the file must include co-authors in Step 3. Submission of Metadata → Add Author.

Authors of published texts will receive up to three complimentary copies of the issue in which their pieces are published.

The ideas and opinions expressed in the articles published are the sole responsability of the authors. Copyright of published materials belongs to Cadernos de Pesquisa, which adopts the license Creative Commons BY-NC-type "Assignment not commercial". The online version is open and free.

Cadernos de Pesquisa not charge submission fees or evaluation articles (articles processing charges - APC).

Plagiarism policy
All manuscripts submitted to Cadernos de Pesquisa are checked by an anti-plagiarism program before being sent for assessment. The purpose of this procedure is to identify plagiarism and self-plagiarism. Plagiarism is the total or partial reproduction or copy of the intellectual work of another person without crediting the source. Self-plagiarism is the total or partial reproduction of one’s own previous work, already published, without citing that it was used previously. To avoid characterization as self-plagiarism, the journal accepts manuscripts from (1) research reports, theses and/or dissertations and (2) papers presented at scientific events. In the first case, the author(s) should conduct a process of preparation and synthesis of the text that results in a scientific paper, according to the journal’s standards. In the second case, the author should invest in extending the previous version, with new data and reflections. Upon submission, there should be clear information about the original work.

Peer review
The Editorial Board conducts a prior analysis of the original work received in order to evaluate its suitability regarding focus and scope/editorial policy of the journal; publishing standards and minimum criteria of a scientific paper in the field of Humanities. If the papers are rejected in this first analysis, they are returned to the authors. If they pass through this initial screening, they are forwarded to specialists, who have a PhD in the field and are affiliated to institutions other than those of the authors, in order to assess their merits. The selection process of the manuscripts involves two reviewers chosen from the following: external evaluators, researchers from the Carlos Chagas Foundation and members of the Editorial Board.


Guidelines for submission of documents


In addition to being original and aligned with the publication's editorial guidelines, pieces for publication in Cadernos de Pesquisa should fit into one of the journal's categories:
Featured topic: publishes dossiers on relevant and/or emerging issues.

Other Topics: presents selected articles on synthesis of original research, results of theoretical work, critical review of a specific bibliographical subject.

Issues under Discussion: includes essay articles with author's opinions on issues under current debate or those proposed for debate. This section accepts responses/replies to previously published texts, edited versions of communications made in meetings and articles that, supported by original research, limit themselves to advocating a given position in a current academic debate, or intend to discuss proposals for public policies.

Open space: space intended to accommodate other types of texts, such as interviews; reports of experiences (descriptions of an individual or collective experience from a specific intervention, taking into account its theory/practical counterpoint and giving precise indication of the conditions under which it occurred); academic and historical documents; and reports (public statements by entities).

Reviews: related to recent national or international publications.

Editorial Highlight: piece drawing attention to a published work, with brief indication of its contents and/or relevance.


Titles of articles should not exceed 11 words (including articles, prepositions, conjunctions etc.). The name(s) of the author(s) should appear as the author wishes it to be published.

The material should be submitted in Word. The article should not exceed 25 pages or 63,300 characters including spaces, including charts, graphs, tables or figures. Page format: numbered, with top margin of 3 cm, bottom margin of 3 cm, left margin of 3 cm and right margin of 2 cm; paragraph 1.25; line spacing 1.5; in Times New Roman, font size 12. The maximum length of the Review should be six pages or 14,550 characters with spaces; for the Featured Editorial, it should not exeed two pages, or 4,250 characters with spaces.

Except for Reviews and Editorial Highlights, all manuscripts should include an abstract of up to 800 characters, with spaces. At the end of each abstract, a maximum of four keywords (descriptors) should be supplied, relating to the content of the text, and these must be searchable Brazilian Thesaurus of Education and/or the UNESCO Thesaurus.


Short verbatim quotations should be incorporated into the text between quotation marks, followed by the author's surname and year of publication in brackets. Quotations of three or more lines should be highlighted in the text indented 1.25, size 10, indicating: (AUTHOR, year, p.). References without a verbatim quotation should be incorporated into the text (e.g.: According to Fonseca (1986)...)

Footnotes should be avoided and used only when strictly necessary, and should not exceed three lines. Consecutive numbering of the notes should be used in the text.
Acronyms should be included when item to which it refers is mentioned for the first time in the article.


These should be presented in grayscale and color, preferably in Excel, in separate files, numbered in Arabic numerals. Their size should allow maximum clarity of reading, and their titles, captions, and headlines should be consistently formatted. The images must have a resolution of at least 300 DPI. Source indication is mandatory and should appear in the references. In the text body, the approximate position for the insertion of the table, diagram etc., should be indicated.


References, restricted only to works cited in the text, should appear at the end of the text and be formatted according to ABNT guidelines (NBR 6023, 2002). They should be organized in alphabetical order of the first author's surname and, where possible, include the first name of the authors. In references including up to three authors, all authors should be cited, and names should be separated by semicolons. When more than three authors are included, only the first is cited, followed by et al. (no italics). Below are models for the most common cases:

Response policy

Cadernos de Pesquisa welcomes comments on articles published in the journal, as well as the author's replies to these comments. Both are subject to the same evaluation process of a regular manuscript. If commentary is accepted for publication, the journal shall offer the same space for the author's reply, either in the same or in the subsequent issue.
