INSTRUCTIONS TO AUTHORS

Aims and editorial policy

EDUCAÇÃO & SOCIEDADE (ES) is a magazine for the diffusion of works which foster academic research and wide discussion about education in the several aspects of its relation with society. The works submitted for publication must be unpublished in the electronic and printed media, and their simultaneous submission to publication in other kinds of media is not allowed. The magazine editorial staff will take articles in Portuguese, Spanish, French, English and German. Articles in English, French and German will be translated to Portuguese and revised by the authors after being approved for publication. In the electronic media, foreign texts, except the ones in Spanish, will also be available in their original languages.

Rules for contributions

Article categories - Educação & Sociedade brings texts on research essays, which compose its different sections: Articles, Review & Summary, Analysis of Pedagogical Practices, Education of Teaching Professionals, Debates & Discussions, Images & Words (including reviews).

Evaluation process - The original works will be submitted to appraisal by the Editorial Committee. This Committee will then take the works considered as proper according to the magazine criteria and then send them to the evaluators (at least 03). These will recommend their acceptance or refusal, or they may suggest some changes. In such case, the changed article will return to the evaluators for final evaluation.

With the blind review system, the advisers' names will be kept secret, as well as the authors' names in relation to advisors.

According to the magazine editorial policy, the following categories are defined for text evaluation: content, form, originality, relevance and newness.

Formal presentation of original texts - The original texts must be written according to the official spelling rules and typed with the use of the Word for Windows program, Garamond type, size 12, double space, in an A4 sheet. The article length, including abstracts, notes and references, must not be over 44,000 characters (considering spaces). When writing the original text, the following structure must be observed.

a) The article title and subtitle (maximum: two lines);

b) Abstract and key words: the abstract must not be longer than 1,000 characters (considering spaces) and the key words, which identify the article content, must be a maximum of five (05). For the written form and style of the abstract, the guidelines in nbr-6028, from the Brazilian Technical Rules Association, or Associação Brasileira de Normas Técnicas (ABNT), must be observed;

c) Title in English, abstract and key words;

d) There must be no author identification in the text structure;

e) Bibliographic references - must be included according to nbr-6023/2002, from the Brazilian Technical Rules Association (abnt), and they must be alphabetically organized from the first author's last name. For bibliographic references to two or three authors, all of them can be mentioned, separated by a semi-colon. For references of more than three authors, only the first author can be mentioned, followed by the expression et al. The precision of references present in the list and the correct quotation of information in the text are of full responsibility of the author(s).

f) Notes: when they exist, they must be numbered in a sequence and included at the end of the article. The use of bibliographic notes is not allowed; so, quotations must be used in the text: reference identification must be done with the indication of the author's (authors') name(s), year of publication and paging, for example, (Nunes, 1995, p. 225).

g) Tables and figures - The tables must be consecutively numbered with Arabic numbers, in the order in which they were included in the text, and headed by their titles, avoiding repetition of the same data in graphs. When building tables, following the "rules of tabular presentation", published by IBGE, is recommended. Charts are identified as tables, following an only numbering sequence throughout the text. Illustrations (photographs, drawings, graphs etc.) will be considered as figures.

It is also recommended that these elements be produced in black and white, with a maximum size of 14 x 21 cm (standard magazine size), with a resolution quality of at least 200 dpis for direct reproduction.

General notes: The main author of each article will be offered five (05) copies of the issue in which his or her work has been published. In case of co-authorship, each author will get three (03) copies, and in case of more than three authors, each one will get two (02) copies.

The magazine staff is not obliged to return the originals of collaboration works sent. Authors must take full responsibility for the content of their published texts, which does not necessarily express the Editorial Committee's opinion.

The works will be thoroughly available electronically, at the Scientific Electronic Library On Line (scielo) site (www.scielo.br/es), immediately after their printed publication.

Guidelines for the submission of works:

From 2009, Educação & Sociedade will operate exclusively through the SCIELO Publication System, which uses the Open Journal System as an electronic managing support for the publication of scientific periodicals.

This way, the process of collecting and estimating articles will necessarily go through an on-line platform in which authors will be able to register and submit their works for the Editorial Committee's appreciation, and even follow the whole process that their texts go through.

In order to register on the system, one must access the address below and then follow the guidelines for the submission of articles to Educação & Sociedade.
