Aims and editorial policy

EDUCAÇÃO & SOCIEDADE (ES) has as target publication scientific/academics original works of Education, in order to encourage the field research and debate, centered in the relationships between education and society. The works directed for publication must be unpublished in printed or electronic media and it must not be submitted simultaneously for evaluation in other periodicals. The magazine will receive for publication articles written in Portuguese, Spanish, Frenchman, English and German. The articles in English, Frenchman and German must be submitted already revised in its language of origin and, after its approval, they will be translated to Portuguese and reviewed by the authors. The articles in Spanish will be published in the origin language. The foreign texts in the electronic publication, with exception of Spanish texts, will also be available in the origin languages.

Are not accepted for publication: research reports, chapter(s) of theses, dissertations or completion of course work, as well as papers (or version thereof) published in national or foreign journals.


Article categories

Educação & Sociedade publishes research articles and assays in different sections of the periodic: Articles, Revision & Synthesis, Analysis of Pedagogical Practices, Teacher Training, Debates & Burning issues, Images & Words (section destined to the publication of works on subjects related to the media and education, as well as assays, book commentaries and summaries, films and other cultural products of interest for the educational field).


The evaluation process

The originals writings will be submitted to the previous appreciation of the Publishing Committee who will direct the writings considered adequate according to the publishing criteria of the magazine to the referees (at least 03). The referees' role is to recommend the acceptance, refusal or recast of the works. In the recast case, the texts will have to return to the referees for final evaluation.

The double-blind system (blind review) allows the names of the referees to remain in secrecy, hiding from them the names of the authors as well.

The publishing politics of the magazine defines the following categories for text evaluation: content, form, originality, relevance, consistency, the present time and adequacy to the publishing target.


Submission of works

The magazine Educação & Sociedade operates exclusively through the system online, Submission (Scielo), using the Open Journal System as the periodic electronic management support and publication of scientific periodical. In this manner, all the collection process and arbitration of articles necessarily goes through this electronic platform. Each author must register in the system and submit the works for appreciation, being able also to follow all the process of arbitration from his or her login and password. Formal presentation for the originals

The originals must be written in the official orthography and typed in word processor Word for Windows, Palatino, size 10, double space, left justified, and A4 format. The authors must submit the text to the orthography and grammatical revision before presenting it to the Magazine. The volume of text papers, including abstracts, footnotes and bibliography, should be between 35,000 characters with spaces (minimum volume) and 45,000 characters with spaces (maximum volume), in exceptional cases at the discretion of the Editors. The summaries cannot exceed 10,000 characters (with space). These orientations must be followed rigorously by the authors and its non-observance imply in the immediate refusal of the text. The following structure must be observed for the preparation of the original:

a) Article Heading and sub-heading (up to two lines);

b) Summary and key-words: the summary must not exceed 800 characters (considering spaces) and there must be a maximum of five (5) key-words identifying the content of the article. For the writing and summary style, the Brazilian Association of Technical Rules (ABNT) orientations from the NBR-6028/2003 must be observe. The summary, the heading and the key-words must also be presented in English and French.

c) There must not be any authorial identification throughout the text body. In this case, it is necessary to enter data regarding the training curriculum and institutional affiliation of the authors in the fields of the form intended for this purpose, to make the user registration system online;

d) Bibliographical references: they must obey the NBR-6023/2002 of the Brazilian Association of Technical Rules (ABNT), as well as be sorted alphabetically from the first author's to the last. In the bibliographical references of texts with up to three authors, all could be cited separating them with semicolons. In the references with more than three authors, only the first one must be cited, followed by the expression et al. The bibliographical references accuracy and the correct citation of its data are the author's responsibility.

e) Notes: in case there are notes, they must be numbered and placed sequentially at the end of the article. The bibliographical notes are not allowed. In this case, citations in the text must be used: according to the NBR 10,520/2002, the citations of the references in the body of the text must be done with the indication of the author(s)' name, year of publication and paging: (NUNES, 1995, p. 225). In case there are more than one author, their names must be separated with a semicolon (NUNES; FERREIRA, 2001, p. 12).

f) Tables and pictures: the tables will have to be numbered, consecutively, with Arabian numbers, in the same order as they had been enclosed in the text and headed by their titles, preventing repetition of the same data in graphs. In the assembly of tables, it is recommended to follow the Normas de apresentação tabular, published by IBGE. Frames are identified as tables, following the same numeration along the text. The illustrations (photographs, drawings, graphs etc.) will be considered pictures.
These elements must be produced in black and white, maximum size of 16 x 24 cm (the magazine standard), whenever possible, with a good quality resolution (up from 200 DPIs) for its direct reproduction.

General comments

  • Since 2011, publishing articles, book reviews and other papers in the journal Educação & Sociedade, upon approval, will happen only through adherence of author(s) as partner(s) of Cedes. This information is available in the online submission system and in the Guidelines for Authors homepage, specifically consisting subtitled "Conditions for submission": After approved the article, is a condition of publication that the author(s) make your membership as partner(s) of Cedes (Check the link:
  • Five (05) units of the fascicle with the respective work published will be supplied gratuitously to the main author of each article; in co-authorship articles, each author will receive (03) three units; in case of more than three authors, each one will receive two (02) units.
  • The works will be entirely available also in electronic format, at the Scientific Electronic Library On Line (Scielo) web site ( immediately after its printed publication.
