About the journal

 

Basic information

 

Gestão & Produção is a journal published in continous flow four times a year year (March, June, September and December) by the Departamento de Engenharia de Produção (DEP) of Universidade Federal de São Carlos (UFSCar).

The first issue of Gestão & Produção was published in April, 1994. Actually, G&P was result of experience of professors of DEP/UFSCar in editing, in the beginning, "Cadernos DEP" in the 1980s, followed by "Cadernos de Engenharia de Produção". The last three issues of "Cadernos de Engenharia de Produção" were a test previous to the launch of Gestão & Produção because most of the journal characteristics were already established, like regularity (three editions per year) and a "blind review" process for evaluating the manuscripts submitted. G&P has also inherited from "Cadernos de Engenharia de Produção" the annual publication of a special issue on a relevant topic of Industrial Engineering and Operations Management.

Gestão & Produção is devoted to publish of original works, as well as the results of studies and researches, in the Industrial Engineering and Operations Management field. According to the Associação Brasileira de Engenharia de Produção (ABEPRO), the main areas of Industrial Engineering and Operations Management are:

  • Production and Operations Management;
  • Quality Management;
  • Economic Management;
  • Ergonomics and Work Safety;
  • Product Engineering;
  • Operations Research;
  • Strategy and Organizations;
  • Technology Management;
  • Information Systems;
  • Environmental Management; and
  • Industrial Engineering and Operations Management Teaching.

The Brazilian Industrial Engineering and Operations Management academia has considered Gestão & Produção as a top journal in the field in Brazil.

The abbreviated title of the journal is Gest. Prod., which should be used in bibliographies, bibliographical references and strips.

Mission and scope

 

To be a means of disseminating original works and presenting research and scientific results important to the areas of Administration and Production Engineering, through empirical, theoretical, and simulation studies.
Gestão & Produção is a publication aimed at an audience consisting mainly of:

  • Professors and researchers working in the areas of Administration and Production Engineering, focusing on the areas of Management; Organizational Strategy; Quality; Planning and Production Control; Logistics; Operational Research; and Work Organization;
  • Researchers in Production Engineering and Administration;
  • Professionals who make use of the knowledge and techniques of Production Engineering; Administration; Production Management; Project Management; Management Economics; and Organizational Theory.

Gestão & Produção publishes the following types of articles:

  1. Original Article: research that represents a technical-scientific advance;
  2. Case Study: articles that describe and analyze cases/situations of companies or present experiences from some real application;
  3. Literature Review: articles which present a complete review of a topic or subject; and
  4. General Review: articles which present a partial but useful review, thus making an effective contribution.

The submitted article must be original. Articles published briefly in Congresses can be published if they present an expansion of research and scientific results, and represent a significant contribution to their respective area.

The subject matter addressed in the submitted article must show adherence to the areas of Administration and/or Production Engineering. The best way to do this is to relate the work with other research previously published in established periodicals in the field of Production Engineering.

 

 

Editorial Policies

 

Language

Submissions can be made in Portuguese and English. After an article is accepted for publication, authors will be required send the final manuscripts in Portuguese and English through the submission system. The publication of the articles in English aims to allow greater exposure and collaboration with the international community, simultaneously meeting requirements imposed by the evaluating institutions, and fomentation in periodicals of Brazil and abroad.

The journal Gestão e Produção will not accept texts translated automatically by computer programs. The use of a company or professional with experience, which issues a certificate of translation or proofreading/editing, will be obligatory for texts prepared in English by non-natives and for translated texts. The costs and responsibility of the translation belongs to the authors.

When performing the translation, special care should be taken with Data, Tables, and Figures, observing the decimal numbers. For texts in Portuguese or Spanish, authors must use a comma, and in English texts, the decimal point.

Foreign words that appear in the text should be in italics (for example: et al.).

Section Policies

Gestão & Produção accepts submissions for the following types of articles :

  1. Original articles: research that represents a technical-scientific advance;
  2. Case Study: articles that describe and analyze cases/situations of companies or present experiences from some real application;
  3. Literature Review: articles which present a complete review of a topic or subject;  and
  4. General Review: articles which present a partial but useful review, thus making an effective contribution.

Gestão & Produção supports and recommends the use of the checklists available in the EQUATOR network, so that the authors prepare their texts according to the best practices of scientific communication most appropriate for each type of research.

The texts cannot exceed 22 pages, excluding bibliographical references.

Peer review

The submitted articles first undergo a technical evaluation to verify if they are in adherence to the norms and editorial policies. Articles that conform to the rules and policies are forwarded to a member of the Editorial Board, who will make the evaluation of the scope and adherence to the subject matter of the journal. The Board may reject the paper before sending it on for review. Articles that follow for evaluation will be reviewed by at least two referees, using the double-blind review process. The responsible editor will interpret the evaluations and will decide to accept or reject them according to the review. Articles accepted with revisions will still undergo a new round of evaluation to verify if the requests of the referees have been met.

After receiving an opinion favorable to the publication of the article, the authors will have 30 days to forward the final revised version of their article, along with the English-language version. If the final translated version of the accepted article is not received within 30 days, the article will be rejected due to failure to meet the deadline in the evaluation process.

Authorship

Gestão & Production Magazine does not allow the addition or removal of authors after the manuscript has been submitted.

All information about the authors and their affiliations will be included in the online submission system only; such information will be extracted from it if the manuscript is accepted.

Authors and affiliations should not be included in the manuscript file to ensure the double-blind review process. In addition, all properties should be removed from loaded manuscripts

The list of authors should be limited to include only those who have made significant contributions to the conception, design, execution, or interpretation of the work.

It is expected that the list of authors and order of names will be carefully worked out prior to submission. Any changes that may be required must be requested before the article is accepted. To make this request, the corresponding author must send the Editor: 1) the reason for the change, and 2) a confirmation and agreement term written and signed by all authors of the article, including those being added or removed from the list.

Record at the end of the articles the contribution of each of the authors and collaborators, using two minimum authorship criteria:

I. Actively participate in the discussion of results;
II. Review and approval of the final version of the paper

Contributors who do not meet the criteria for Authorship should be mentioned in the Acknowledgments section.

Ethics and misconduct in publishing

Gestão & Produção follows the recommendations of the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE), and recommends that authors, reviewers, and editors do likewise. All cases of suspected plagiarism or misconduct should be reported to the journal's office and will be investigated. Expressions of concern, errata, or withdrawals will be published as necessary.

The following are the basic principles that authors, reviewers, and editors agree to follow when submitting or evaluating articles for the journal Gestão & Produção.
Authors:

  1. All authors must ensure that the text, data, and ideas submitted represent the original result of their own work, and do not infringe on the intellectual property of third parties, institutions, or works previously published.
  2. All authors present in the list of authors of the article are also responsible for the content submitted. They are responsible and undertake to collaborate with requests for additional information for potential investigations.
  3. The corresponding author must obtain written authorization from all co-authors. Only those with an effective scientific and/or analysis and writing contribution should be included in the list of authors, while other collaborators should be included in the acknowledgments section.
  4. Authors should not submit the manuscript for evaluation in any other medium simultaneously.
  5. Authors must not submit previously published works, whole or subdivided and submitted as minor articles separately.
  6. Where relevant, authors must obtain the approval of the ethics committee by informing them of the approval data during the submission.
  7. Potential conflicts of interest, whether financial, professional, or personal, should be reported separately by each author.
  8. All funding information must be duly declared, including the name of the body and file number.

Reviewers:

  1. Reviewers must communicate to the editor-in-chief whenever there is suspicion of plagiarism or misconduct;
  2. Reviewers must evaluate the manuscripts in a completely impartial manner, free of influences or prejudices of any kind. When submitting an evaluation they should clearly describe any potential conflicts of interest they may have in relation to the assessed work;
  3. When asked to perform a review, reviewers must promptly express whether or not they accept an evaluation, and deliver their opinion within the stipulated deadline; and
  4. Reviewers must conduct the evaluation without external assistance and without sharing the text and data with colleagues, observing the most complete ethical rigor, and maintaining total confidentiality. They must not use the information in their own research until publication of the work.

Editors:

  1. Editors must evaluate and ensure that the potential conflicts of interest declared by the authors are published. When submitting a manuscript themselves, they must ensure that it is processed by another publisher;
  2. Editors are to provide mechanisms and promote the use of plagiarism detection tools.
  3. To ensure anonymity between authors and reviewers, editors must make efforts to ensure that peer review is impartial; and

Editors must follow the guidelines of COPE (Committee on Publication Ethics) in all cases of suspected misconduct or unethical behaviour, seeking more information and taking the necessary actions by publishing expressions of concern, errata, or retractions.

Declaration of conflicts of interest

The Journal Gestão & Produção requires that all authors declare potential conflicts of interest, whether financial or personal, with other persons or organizations that may be construed as influencing the research or its interpretation. Authors should submit individual statements that will be archived and a summary statement to be published in the article. Potential conflicts of interest include participation in a corporate or management board, receipt of consulting funds, or travel or lecture payments by a company that participated in the research.

Funding source declaration

Financial support received by all authors should be always expressed by identifying the institution and project number, together with a description of the role of the institution (if any) regarding the manner in which the research was conducted, its preparation, and data collection and analysis. If the funding institution had no role in the conduct of the research this should also be stated.

Data availability statement

Gestão & Produção encourages authors to deposit the data used in their research in repositories such as Mendeley Data, figshare, or other data repositories. The availability of data increases credibility and facilitates derivative studies. In order to facilitate the reproducibility of the study, authors are encouraged to provide software, codes, models, algorithms, protocols, methods, and other useful materials related to their research. If data are available, they can be cited in the list of references.

In some cases data cannot be made available due to legal issues, confidentiality etc. Authors should provide a statement stating whether data is available (and how it can be obtained), or why it could not be made available.

Copyright and license

Accepted papers are published in Open Access under the Creative Commons Attribution CC-BY license, which permits use, distribution, and reproduction in any medium, without restrictions, provided the original work is properly cited. The authors retain all copyrights, transferring to the journal Gestão & Produção the right to carry out the original publication and keep it up to date.

 

 

Manuscript preparation guidelines

 

The articles must be submitted by ScholarOne, submission system.

For accepted articles will be charged the amount of US$200,00 referring to the publication fee to pay for part of the publishing of the article.

The article should be prepared in MS Word®, with Times New Roman font, size 12 and line spacing of 1.5. The specification for the upper, lower, right and left margins is 2.5 cm. The file size should not exceed 3 MB.

Authors and affiliations should not be included in the manuscript file to ensure the double-blind review process. In addition, all properties should be removed from loaded manuscripts.

Files for submission

Upon submission, the author must send three documents: the open science compliance form (available at the link below), the text of the manuscript without identifying the authors and a document showing the identification of the authors, as well as the declarations.

List of Authors

Include the full names of all authors, one per line. Use superscript numeric references to relate affiliations, and an asterisk "*" to indicate the corresponding author. Contributors who do not meet the criteria for authorship, according to our editorial policies, should only be included in the acknowledgments.
The journal Gestão e Produção also recommends the adoption and submission of the ORCID ID for all authors. Example:

Acknowledgements

Contributors who do not meet the criteria for authorship, according to our editorial policies, should only be included in the acknowledgments.

The identification of the authors must be present in a separate document from the main text, named authorship.docx. This document should contain:

Declarations

The following statements should be prepared as directed in editorial policies:

  • Declaration of funding sources: Any support that has been received should be described, including agency and project data, e.g. "This work was supported by FAPESP (projects xxxx, yyyy); and CNPq (project zzzzzz)." If the work has not received financial support, include the following statement: "This work did not have specific funding from institutions or bodies in the public, private, or non-profit sectors."
  • Declaration of Conflict of Interest: Develop the statement as described in our editorial policies. In the event that there is no potential conflict of interest, authors should state "The authors declare no relevant conflicts of interest."
  • Data availability statement: Follow editorial policy guidelines and make a statement about whether the data used is available and how it can be obtained, or a statement of the reason for not making the data available.

The manuscript.docx file should contain the main body of the manuscript, including the following:

Title

Avoid using acronyms or formulas. Keep in mind that the title of your article will often appear in search results, so keep it informative and concise. After the title in the primary language of the research, include your translated version. Texts in English should include the translation of the title into Portuguese, and vice-versa.

Abstract and keywords

Compose an unstructured abstract, of between 150 and 250 words, which can stand alone without the need for references, and without using abbreviations. If acronyms are absolutely necessary, they must be defined at the earliest opportunity.

Include 3 to 6 keywords after the abstract.

Texts in English should include translation of the abstract and keywords into Portuguese, and vice-versa.

Sections

Separate and organize your text clearly into numbered sections. The subsections should be numbered 1.1 (after 1.1.1, 1.1.2, ...), 1.2, etc. (the abstract should not be included in the section numbering).

Figures

Graphic figures, images, flowcharts, drawings, etc. must be cited in the body of the text in Arabic numerals and present a resolution of 300 dpi. Figures may be inside or outside the document, provided only one copy of each figure cited in the text is presented. Figure captions should be just below them. If there is text in the figure, ensure it is in the language of the article.

Because Gestão e Produção is a priority online publication, authors can use colors in the preparation of their figures. Figures will not be redrawn or edited and therefore should be prepared, preferably by a professional, with care so that they maintain uniformity in the type and size of source used throughout the whole article. We recommend that all ICJME guidelines be followed for preparation of illustrations for submission. Images should not be manipulated or adjusted in a way that could result in misinterpretation of the information. We recommend observing the tips and examples published in "What's in a picture? The temptation of image manipulation" (Rossner and Yamada 2004, Journal of Cell Biology, 166: 11).

The graphics, photographs, diagrams, illustrations, etc. are considered figures, and should be sent in TIFF or JPG formats, with a minimum size of 2500 pixels wide, in addition to allowing the perfect reading of all texts and symbols used.

If you use arrows, symbols, letters, or numbers to identify parts of the figures, be sure to clearly identify them in the legend.

Tables

These should always be editable, that is, made using the ability to create tables in MS Word. Use tables to present quantifiable data and pictures to present non-quantifiable information. Tables and pictures should always be cited in the text, using numeration in Arabic numerals and in the order in which they appear in the text.

Tables and graphs must be inserted in the article after be cited preceded by the respective legend.

The caption should be a brief description of the table, and specific explanations of values or abbreviations should be inserted in its footer.

Footnotes

The magazine Gestão e Produção does not use footnotes under any circumstances.

Mathematical equations and expressions

Simple formulas displayed online can be expressed as plain text when possible. All mathematical expressions must be editable, using the native MS Word editor or MathType, and numbered in Arabic numerals and quoted in the order they appear in the text.

Language features

In decimal numbers for texts in Portuguese or Spanish, use commas, not decimal points. Foreign words that appear in the text should be in italics (for example: et al.).

Citations

Please make sure that all citations are in the reference list and vice versa. All citations made in the text should be referenced following the standard set forth in the sixth edition of the American Psychological Association's Publication Manual.

Citations made in the body of the text should always be followed by the year of publication of the reference: Donaire (1999) or (Donaire, 1999). When two authors, indicate the surnames of the authors separated by "&": Ackermann & Eden (2001) or (Ackermann & Eden, 2001). If there are more than two authors, cite the surname of the first, followed by the expression "et al.": Manso et al. (2015) or (Manso et al., 2015). If there is more than one article by the same authors published in the same year, make the distinction with lower case letters: Manso et al. (2015a, b). To separate two or more quotations, use the semicolon: (Manso et al.; 2015, Ackermann & Eden, 2001; Donaire, 1999a, b)

References

The list of references will be reformatted to the APA style; however, authors may submit in any of the most established international formats (APA, Harvard, Chicago, etc.), provided that it is presented in alphabetical order of the last surname of the first author followed by the using the lowercase letters (a, b, etc.) when necessary. References should include the names of all authors, and names of journals should be indicated in full. Here are some examples formatted according to the APA standard:
