Background Mission The Brazilian Journal of Psychiatry (BJP), the official journal of Institute of Psychiatry of the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro, is published regularly for more than 70 years and the most traditional psychiatric journal in Brazil. The mission of BJP is to advance the understanding and care of individuals with mental disorders through the publication of articles that discuss the relationship of psychiatry with different scientific fields, including clinical medicine, psychology, and sociology. The Jornal Brasileiro de Psiquiatria accepts articles written in Portuguese, English or in Spanish, within the following categories: a) original articles; b) brief communications; c) reviews; d) updates; e) case reports; f) letters to the editor; g) book reviews; The original must be sent to editor Leonardo Fontenelle or Antônio Egídio Nardi by the following e-mail: editora@ipub.urfr.br. The original must bring an authorization letter signed by all of the authors, according to the model below, and it must be sent by mail to the journal address. Once accepted for publication, the paper becomes permanent ownership to Jornal Brasileiro de Psiquiatria and all rights are reserved in Brazil and abroad. Permission Letter The undersigned authors transfer to the Jornal Brasileiro de Psiquiatria, with exclusivity, all the publishing rights, under any means, of the article..., here the authors guarantee that the article is neither published nor being evaluated by other periodicals, moreover that the study was conducted in accordance to the principles of the Declaration of Helsinki and its amendments, including informed consent approved by a properly qualified ethics committee."(Include complete name, address for postage, telephone, fax, e-mail and signature of all the authors). Peer Review Authors will receive, through e-mail or letter, a confirmation note and a protocol number upon the manuscripts arrival. The number shall be used throughout the following correspondence. Articles submitted to the Jornal Brasileiro de Psiquiatria are primarily evaluated for its structure and the publishing scope of the journal. Following initial evaluation, articles are submitted anonymously to at least two anonymous and independent reviewers. In case of conflicting reviews, the editors will send the manuscript to one or two other reviewers. After received, the time process for articles final approval takes no longer than three months. Authors will receive the editors final decision, along with copies of the reviewers comments. In case of manuscripts accepted under conditions, authors must return the final text with necessary changes, according to the editors instructions. Disclosures The authors are requested to disclose all possible kinds of conflict of interest, including sources of funding and any other relationship. If you are sure you do not have any disclosure, please state "none" under "Disclosures". Do not forget sources of funding must be disclosed under "Acknowledgments". Permission to Reproduce Materials Previously Published The authors are requested to send us permission copies to reproduce materials
(i.e., illustrations and tables) from copyright owner. Your reports will
not be published unless we have got that permission. Consent Terms The reports must mention that patients included in studies gave an Written
Informed Consent, according to clinical research regulation in the country. Research Ethical Approval The authors are requested to state clearly under "Methods"that any study of humans has been conducted only after approval by a Research Ethical Board. Also, they must confirm animal trials are in accordance with ethical care standards to animals involved. |
Overall Structure of the Manuscript

Abbreviations should be avoided; official abbreviations, however, may be used, keeping in mind that the first mention of a term in the text must be complete, followed by its abbreviation between brackets. Medicines must be referred to under their chemical name. All pages must be numbered, with total words count indicated at the first page (except for abstracts, in Portuguese and English, references, pictures and illustrations). The first page (cover page) should contain both Title and Short Title in English and in Portuguese. The Short Title should contain a total of up to 50 characters (with spaces), authors' names and affiliations should be included. The second page must contain an abstract in Portuguese. The abstract
must be informative, giving a clear and concise description of the articles
content, never exceeding the limit of 200 words. In original articles,
brief communications and reviews, summaries must be structured containing
four topics: objective(s), methods, results and conclusions. Key words
in Portuguese should follow the summary and be limited to four words reflecting
the content of the articles subject. We recommend the terms presented
at the list entitled Medical Subject Headings from the Index Medicus or,
for TThe third page must contain an abstract and key words, in English, which must be both identical to their versions in Portuguese. From the fourth page on begin the body of text which in original articles and brief communications, must contain the following sections: introduction, methods, results, discussion and conclusion. Introduction Must contain a concise review of any literature directly related to the theme, as well as the aim of the study. Methods Must describe the model of study and an a detailed methodology that permit its replication by other authors. Results Must be described logically, sequentially and concisely, with the occasional help of tables and illustrations. Discussion The discussion must be limited to highlighting the conclusions of the study, consider any similarities or differences with the results of other authors, implications of the findings, limitations and future perspectives. Conclusions One must specify, preferentially in a short paragraph, solely the conclusions the study data allow to support, together with their clinical significance (avoiding excessive generalizations). Tables and illustrations must be numbered in Arabic numerals, and prepared in separate paper sheets, with the respective captions. They should be in a digital format and independent file, proper for reproduction. Each table must be self-explanatory, and must not repeat the information

Unpublished material may be cited in parentheses in the text, but should not be listed in the bibliography. Accessed on April 12, 2007. Types of Articles 1. Original articles Manuscripts communicating results of research, clinical experiences or other original contributions. Typically, the original articles present new data derived from an investigation done with a representative number of individuals. The original articles must not exceed 4,000 words and 30 bibliographic references. 2. Brief communications Characterized by manuscripts containing small experiences or preliminary communications with original character, never longer than 2,000 words and with 15 bibliographic references. 3. Review/update articles Review articles are manuscripts containing a critic and systematic evaluation of literature about a given subject, and must contain their own conclusions. They should contain a maximum of 6,000 words and 80 bibliographic references. Updating articles are descriptive and interpretative works based on recent literature about the global situation where a given subject is placed. Containing no more than 3,000 words and 40 bibliographic references, they must be briefer than review articles. They should have front page, structured abstract in the case of reviews, introduction, methods and discussion (which may be subdivided as an authors option), conclusion and bibliographic references. 4. Case reports Manuscripts containing interesting and original clinical cases. They should contain: front page, summaries, introduction, description of the case, its relevance and/or originality, discussion, conclusion and bibliography on the theme. They should not exceed 1,500 words and 15 references. The description of the case must be brief, with a review of the literature about clinic and therapeutic aspects, avoiding redundant or unimportant data. The discussion must have the data in comparison and contrast with similar cases present in literature. 5. Letters Communications aiming at discussing articles recently published in the journal or describing original researches or meaningful scientific discoveries. Brief letters with a maximum of 500 words and five references will be considered, as long as the sentence for publishing is explicit. 6. Book reviews Brief reviews about recently published books that may interest the psychiatric milieu. 7. Comments Critic and well-based comments made by professionals with large experience in some subject or area of knowledge. They are requested by publishers and may be related to a certain article published in that issue or not. They must contain a maximum of 900 words and six bibliographic references. 8. Clinical conferences Articles requested by publishers and written by researchers or professionals widely experienced in a given area of knowledge, who are invited to discuss a clinical case or a polemic subject, creating an interactive discussion. They should be limited to 4,000 words and 40 references. In accordance to Resolution number 1.595 of Conselho Federal de Medicina (May 18, 2000), it is obligatory for authors of "articles promoting any pharmaceutical products or equipments for Medicine usage to declare the agents sponsoring their researches". |
