Scope and editorial policy

The Journal of Venomous Animals and Toxins is an interdisciplinary publication in English on 3.5" HD/DD diskettes and online devoted to research on different aspects of toxins, venomous animals and their products and derivatives.

The journal welcomes original work and its acceptance for review involves the understanding that the contents of the manuscript have not previously been published elsewhere, except as an abstract or preliminary report. Each issue may also contain: the Editor's viewpoint, Original papers, Review articles, Short communications, Preliminary reports, Letters to the Editor, Case reports, Book reviews, Bibliography of interest, and Important information.

The articles published in the journal cover from the systematics and morphology of venomous animals to the biochemistry, pharmacology and immunology of venoms, the epidemiology of envenomation by different animals, insects, algae, bacteria, fungi, and plant products; besides dealing with the molecular biology of venoms, as well as the physiology of their actions, treatment of their effects, preparation and evaluation of vaccines, etc.

The journal also publishes abstracts of theses in the area of venoms and envenomations, as well as abstracts of papers presented in scientific meetings in Brazil.

All manuscripts are sent to two referees for their review and recommendations. The final decision on acceptance or rejection is made by the Editor and/or Associate Editors.

Copyrights on all materials published in this journal belong to CEVAP. Permission must be requested for the use of all or a part of this journal in other publications. By submitting a manuscript, the authors agree that the copyright for their article is transferred to the publisher if and when is accepted for publication.


Preparation of originals

All manuscripts should be written in English and submitted in triplicate. The copies should be typewritten, with 25 mm margins on all sides, double spaced, on one side of the paper (33x24 cm or 28x21 cm).

Authors are strongly encouraged to submit their manuscripts on IBM-PC compatible personal computer on 3.5'' HD/DD diskettes together with the printed version on Microsoft Word for Windows. The author should label disk with the document complete file name, including the extension.

Papers should contain the author's name(s), affiliations, keywords and address for correspondence. The corresponding author may expect to hear from the Editor within 8-12 weeks after submission of a manuscript as to its acceptability for publication. Authors should retain one copy of the manuscripts as the Editors cannot accept responsibility for their damage or loss.

Original papers

They should contain: a 150-200 - word Abstract, Introduction, Material or Patients and Methods, Results, Discussion, Acknowledgments, References and Legends for the illustrations.

Tables should be typed double spaced on a separate page. They should be designed for printing in a 1-column width. Graphs, Figures, Drawings and Photographs should be numbered and planned for printing in 1-column width. Glossy photographic prints, drawings, graphs should be submitted in duplicate, unmounted with the author's name and an arrow indicating the top of the figure on back. Legends should be separate and not attached to or written on the illustration.

Unpublished results and personal communications may be cited in the text, but should not appear in the references.

Review articles

Articles of interest of toxinologists. They should be presented in the same format as full paper, except that they should not be divided into sections such as Introduction, Material and Methods, Results and Discussion. They should, however, contain a 150-words Abstract.

Short communications

Preliminary reports and Letters to the Editor: They differ from full manuscripts only that the research study does not lend itself to an extended presentation. These should not exceed two or three printed pages including illustrations and references. The form is identical to that of full manuscripts except that they should not be divided into Introduction, Material and Methods, Results and Discussion. Short communications and Preliminary reports should include an Abstract of 150-words and two tables or two figures, one of each.

Book reviews and Thesis abstracts

Books should be sent to the Editor to be reviewed. No books will be returned. We welcome thesis abstracts for publication.

Case reports

Brief individual case report of unusual interest.

Important information

The Journal of Venomous Animals and Toxins will publicize Congresses, Symposiums, Meetings, Thesis defenses, Changes of address, Current papers of interest, Correspondences, Classified advertisements (venom derivatives and honeybee products).

Bibliography of interest

We invite authors to submit publications of interest.
