Guidelines for publication

Presentation of Manuscripts

The journal of Psicologia: Teoria e Pesquisa adopts the publication guidelines of APA (5th edition, 2001), except in specific situations where there is any conflict regarding need to assure compliance with blind peer review, matters of Portuguese usage, general standards by ABNT, internal procedures of the journal, including operational infrastructure characteristics. Omission of information as to the details below leads to compliance with APA guidance. The manuscripts should be written in Portuguese. Exceptionally, English, French, Spanish and German might be accepted, at the discretion of the Editorial Board.

The original manuscripts should be sent in five hardcopies, using double spacing (distance between lines is 1.0 cm), fonts Times New Roman, CGTimes, Roman or Prestige, size 12, not exceeding 80 characters/line and the amount of pages appropriate to the category of the paper, numbering all pages as from the customized cover sheet that is number one. The pages should be letter-sized or A4, with top and bottom margins of at least 2.5 cm, and left and right margins of at least 3 cm.

In order to estimate equivalence of pages, the authors should use the reference that one printed page of the journal corresponds to three pages of the manuscript, including all the pages specified in the description of presentation (that is, from cover sheet to figures and tables).

A digital version of the manuscript (Floppy Disk or CD-ROM) should also be submitted. The format of the text and the page should comply the same characteristics indicated for the printed version.

If requested, a reformulated printed version in threefold and a version in digital format (Floppy disk or CD-ROM) should be submitted within a maximum time limit of 30 days.

The modified version should be sent in three hardcopies and one copy in diskette, using the word processor chosen among the options accepted by the journal. An updated list of these options may be requested to the Editor. The format of text and pages should comply with the same characteristics indicated for the first version.

Any submission to the journal should be followed by a letter signed by the main author, explaining the reason for submitting or re-submitting the paper for publication. In case of multiple authors, the final version should include a letter signed by all authors. Instructions for writing the publication agreement letter, essential for the work to be printed, will be sent to the main author by the journal.

The presentation of the manuscripts should be as follows:

1. Cover sheet without authors' name containing only:

1.1. Complete title in Portuguese, with no more than 10 words.

1.2. Suggestion concerning an abbreviated title for the header, with no more than 4 words.

1.3. Complete title in English, compatible with the title in Portuguese.

2. Cover sheet with authors' name containing:

2.1. Complete title in Portuguese.

2.2. Suggestion concerning an abbreviated title.

2.3. Complete title in English.

2.4. Name of each author, followed by affiliation at the time of submission.

2.5. Indication, by the author, of the person responsible for correspondence, with complete address, according to postal standards. Include e-mail, if available.

2.6. Indication of address for corresponding to the Editor about the manuscript process. It should include fax, telephone and e-mail, if available.

2.7. If necessary, indicate updated affiliation information.

2.8. If appropriate, include a paragraph mentioning financial support, collaboration of colleagues and technicians, origin of the work (for instance, if previously presented in events, derived from thesis or dissertation, data collection carried out in institution different from that mentioned in 2.4), and other facts that should be reported for ethical reasons.

3. Page with Abstract, in Portuguese.

The abstract should have at most 150 words for manuscripts in categories 1, 100 words for categories 2, 3, 4 and 5, and 50 words for categories 6 and 7. The categories 8 and 9 have no abstract. After the abstract, three to five keywords should be included for indexing. The keywords chosen should precisely classify the article, in order to allow it to be retrieved together with similar papers, and to be searched by an researcher performing a bibliographic/literature survey.

In the case of a research report, the abstract should include: a brief description of the investigated problem, characteristics of the sample, method used for data collection, results and conclusions, its implications or applications.

The abstract of a critical review or a theoretical study should include the topic discussed (in one phrase), objective, thesis or construct under analysis or the main guideline of the study, sources used (for instance, observations made by the author, published literature) and conclusions.

4. Page with Abstract, in English, compatible with the abstract in Portuguese.

The Abstract should comply with the same specifications for the Portuguese version, followed by keywords compatible with those in Portuguese.

5. Text.

In all categories of original papers the text should be easily recognized as to organization, signaled by titles and subtitles. In the case of research reports, the text must have introduction, methodology, results and discussion. The non-bibliographic notes should be reduced to a minimum amount and be included as footnotes, numbered by Arabic numerals that should come immediately after the text segment related to the note. The positions suggested for inserting figures and tables should be indicated in the text. Citations of authors should be in accordance to APA standards, as shown in item IV. In the case of complete transcription of a text, it must be in inverted comma and the citation of the author, followed by the page number mentioned. A literal citation with 40 or more words should be presented in one block, in a new paragraph, using indention of five spaces from the margin, in the same position of a new paragraph. The font size should be 12, as in the remaining text.

6. References, organized according to the following general standards. Articles by one author and by the same author are organized by year of publication, and the oldest come first. Works by one author come before manuscripts by joint authors, if the surname is the same. Works in which the main author is the same, but the joint authors are different, are organized by the surname of joint authors. Manuscripts by the same joint authors are organized by date, the oldest coming first. Works by the same author and the same date are organized in alphabetical order by title, not considering the first word if an article or pronoun, except if the title itself provides indications of order; the year is immediately followed up by small case letters. If the name of the author is repeated, it should not be replaced by a dash or other signs. The formatting of the reference list should be appropriate for review and editing – apart from double spacing and font size 12, normal paragraph with indention only on the first line, with no margin shifts (as explained in item V); highlights should be indicated by underlining (for instance, underline). The formatting of paragraphs with indention and highlights in Italic is restricted to the final editing phase of an article.

7. Appendices, only if they have important original information, or some highlight essential for understanding of any section of the manuscript. Appendices should be avoided.

8. Page with titles of all figures, numbered as indicated in the text.

9. Figures, including the legends, one per page, in hardcopy, and one per file, if electronically prepared. In order to assure quality in reproduction, the figures with drawings should be submitted with good photography quality. Figures with charts should not be printed in matrix printers. Since the version to be published should be at most 8.3 cm wide, for simple figures, and 17.5 cm, for complex figures, the authors should consider reading quality of the legends if reduction is needed.

10. Tables, including title and notes, one per page, in hardcopy and one per file. In the printed version the table should not be more than 17.5 cm wide x 23.7 cm long. For simple tables, the author should limit their width to 60 characters per printed column, including 3 characters between the columns; for complex tables, limit their width to 125 characters per two printed columns. Tables should be 55 line long, at most, including title and footnotes. For further details, particularly in anomalous cases, see the APA manual.

Common types of citation in the text

Citation of article by multiple authors

1. Two authors

The surname should be in all citations, using and or &, as in the example below:

"The method proposed by Siqueland and Delucia (1969)" or "the method was initially proposed to study vision (Siqueland & Delucia, 1969)".

2. From three to five authors

The surname of all authors is shown in the first citation, as the example above. From the second citation on, only the surname of the main author is cited followed by et al. and year, if it is the first citation of a reference within the same paragraph:

Spielberger, Gorsuch and Lushene (1994) verified that ... [first citation in the text]
Spielberger et al. (1994) verified that ...[subsequent citation, first shown in a paragraph]
Spielberg et al. verified that ... [omit year in subsequent citations within the same paragraph]

Exception: If the abbreviated form lead to apparent identity of two articles by different joint authors, the joint authors should be mentioned until ambiguity is removed. The articles by Hayes, S.C., Brownstein, A.J. Haas, J.R. & Greenway, D.E. (1986) and Hayes, S.C. Brownstein, A.J., Zettle, R.D., Rosenfarb, I. & Korn, Z. (1986) are cited as follows:

"Hayes, Brownstein, Haas et al. (1986) and Hayes, Brownstein, Zettle et al. (1986) verified that..."

All names should be listed in References.

3. Six or more authors

As from the first citation in the text, only the surname of the first author is mentioned, followed by et al., except if this form leads to ambiguity, when the same solution indicated in the previous item should be used:

Rodrigues et al. (1988).

All names should be listed in References.

Citation of works discussed in a secondary source

The author of a manuscript uses a source discussed in another article, having not read the original article (for example, a study by Flavell, cited by Shore, 1982). The following citation should be used in the text:

Flavell (as cited by Shore, 1982) comments that these students ...

In References, include only the secondary source, in this case, Shore, using the appropriate form.

Citation of old works reissued

Author (date of original publication/date of edition searched). For example, Franco (1790/1946).

Citation of personal communication

This type of citation should be avoided since it does not provide information that is retrievable by conventional means. If really necessary, it should be included in the text, but not in References.

C.M.L.C. Zannon (personal communication, October 30 1994)
