Revista Árvore is a technical-scientifical journal of the Sociedade de Investigações Florestais (SIF). The journal continuously publishes original papers of scientific value in the field of forestry and similar areas.

Its abbreviated title is Rev. Árvore, and it should be used in bibliographies, footnotes, references and bibliographic strips.

1.1 Objectives and scope

Revista Árvore is a scientific communication vehicle from Sociedade de Investigações Florestais – SIF. This open access journal is peer reviewed and bimonthly publishes scientific value papers from the field of Forest Science. The thematic areas for publication are Forest Environment and Nature Conservation, Forest Management, Silviculture and Wood Technology and Forest Products Utilization.

The journal editorial policy aims to keep high ethical conduct regarding publications and its staff, strictness on scientific papers’ quality, qualified reviewers, respectfulness toward authors and impartial decision-making. Revista Árvore publishes only English papers.

Review Articles can be published if there is a relevant discussion, which summarizes the state of the art about the subject. Only literature review is not accepted.

1.2 Thematic areas and subjects published by Revista Árvore

1.3 Criteria for articles acceptance

The acceptance criteria include:

1. The manuscript must be original, filling a research gap or contributing to the development of Forest Science, through a new method or concept.
2. The manuscript should follow the journal guidelines (author instructions).
3. The article will not be accepted when already sent or published in another journal, as stated by the authors.
4. We encourage authors to send the manuscript for language and grammatical corrections before submitting it to Revista Árvore. The manuscript may be rejected without peer review, if the text is not appropriate.
5. The quality of the scientific writing is essential.
6. Manuscripts originated from local research should have content of international interest.
7. It is necessary a detailed description of methodology and techniques.
8. Conclusions must be in accordance to the objectives and be supported by the results.
9. Manuscripts exclusively based on diagnostics, reports, descriptions, inventories and characteristics will not be accepted.
10. All manuscripts submitted must comply with editorial ethics.
11. Authors are encouraged to make their main data available in data repositories.
12. Plagiarism is not admitted.
13. Authors must complete an application form in the manuscript submission procedure.
14. Authors must include their identification ORCID in the submission procedure.
15. The Editorial Board or Reviewer reserves the right to reject the manuscript that does not meet one or more of the journal’s criteria.

1.4 Publication charge

     Revista Árvore informs that the papers publication charge is R$ 800.00 for payments in Brazil and US$ 320.00 for international payments.

The charge will be applied to papers accepted for publication and will be valid for papers submitted to the journal from March 23, 2022.

There will be no charge during the manuscript submission process and peer review.     

1.5 Declaration of presentation

In the submission, author(s) must present a declaration with the following content:

• The article has not been, previously, published (except as an abstract, expanded abstract, maximum of three pages, in annals of congress). In this case, the author must include a note (for instance, this document was published as abstract in...).
• The manuscript has not been submitted to another journal.
• All authors have approved the publication.
• All authors effectively have contributed to produce the manuscript.
• There is not conflict of interest regarding financial gain to carry out the work.
• The manuscript was approved by the Ethics Committee or by an equivalent institution (in case of research with humans and animals, in which case a document should be attached).

1.6 Language (usage and editing services)

The manuscript can be submitted in Portuguese or in English. However, all accepted articles will be published in English only. In this case, the authors will perform the translation into English at his own and have to send a declaration that a certified company or professional has performed the translation.

1.7 Open access

Articles are available for free to the general public.

1.8 Copyright and license

To publish an article, including abstract, art, photograph and figure, the author must submit a declaration agreeing with the concession of copyrights or publication rights to Sociedade de Investigações Florestais (SIF).

1.9 Responsibility

The scientific content as well opinions expressed in the published article are entirely responsibility of the authors and reflect their opinion, which do not represent, necessarily, the point of view of the Sociedade de Investigações Florestais (SIF) or the Editorial Committee.

1.10 Authors, identification of their institutions and acknowledgments

The file attached in the submission system should not contain author(s) names, their institutions or acknowledgments, in order to avoid their identification by reviewers. There is an appropriate place in the submission system for this information.

1.11 Ethics

Author(s) must attach a document approved by an Ethic Committee or an equivalent institution when research involves humans or animals.

2.1. Submission letter

Authors should explain the relevance or contribution of the manuscript to Forest Science.

2.2. Online submission

In the first submission, authors should register in the SciELO platform, attempting to fill the author's field. If the online submission is not possible, contact the Office by e-mail rarvore@sif.org.br.com or call +55 (31) 3612-3959 for clarification.

2.3. Manuscript formatting

The manuscript should be prepared according to the specifications in Table 1.

2.4. Tables

• Table Titles should be auto explanatory and placed before the table;
• Tables should be numbered consecutively with Arabic numerals (eg. Table 1 - ). Notice the required spaces and dash line;
• Tables should be cited in the text within parentheses, for example (Table 1) or (Tables 1 and 2);
• The source of the data presented in each Table (Source:) should be inserted at the bottom of the tables;
• Table(s) should be placed at the end of the manuscript and its insertion in the text should be indicated as: insert here Table 1.

2.5. Figures (graph, map, image, photography and drawing)

• Figures should be clear and their titles written at the bottom.
• Figures should be numbered consecutively in Arabic (eg. Figure 1 - ). Notice the required spaces and dash line.
• Figures should be cited in the text within parentheses (eg. (Figure 1) or (Figures 1 and 2)).
• The source of the data presented in each Figure (Source:) should be inserted at the bottom of the figure.
• Figure(s) should be placed at the end of the manuscript and its insertion in the text should be indicated as: insert here Figure 1.
• Figures containing subgroups, name the subgroups with capital letters (without parentheses and no point after letters) in the upper left corner of each subgroup.
• Grouped figures are cited in the text within parentheses as it follows (eg. Figure 1A, Figure 1B, etc.).
• Figures should be preferably be colored for online publication.

2.6. Mathematical instructions

The main mathematical instructions are:

• Preferably, use a software with built-in support for writing and editing equations. 
• Equations cited in the text should be numbered in sequence and within parentheses (Equation 1, Equation 2, etc.). The equation numbering (Eq. 1, Eq. 2, etc.), should be aligned at the right of the text. 
• The symbols and units should be identified after the equation.
• The bar (slash) "/" should be used for simple fractions instead horizontal line, eg.: 1/5; 3/8).

2.7. Botanical nomenclature

Genus and scientific name of species must be in italic and follow the rules of the International Code of Nomenclature: algae, fungi and plants – Melbourne Code

Scientific names of the species should be submitted with the author(s) name (instance.g., Pinus sylvestris L.) only when first mentioned in the title, abstract or text.

2.8. System of units

Units of measurement should be in accordance with the International System of Units (IS).

2.9. References style, reference list and citations in the text

The main guidelines are:

• Revista Árvore utilizes the Vancouver standard.
• References should be mainly recent and from scientific articles published in indexed journals.
• Footnotes are not accepted.
• Text citations:

One author: Siiskonen (2013) or (Siiskonen, 2013)
Two authors: Rottensteiner and Stampfer (2013) or (Rottensteiner and Stampfer, 2013)
Three or more authors: Cohen et al. (2016) or (Cohen et al., 2016)

• Text citation regarding authors with same last name and date (for instance, Souza L, 2001; Souza E, 2001) should use the letter of the alphabet to differentiate the citations (Souza, 2001a e Souza, 2001b).

Examples of Revista Árvore reference styles for articles, books and other publications:

Title, Authors, Abstract, Keywords, Introduction, Material and Methods, Results, Discussion, Conclusion, Acknowledgements (optional), and References. 

3.1 Title

It should be short, concise and informative (maximum of 20 words). Avoid acronyms and methods unless they are part of the research originality. 

3.2 Authors and affiliations

Authors’ names should not be part of the presented manuscript. In the submission process, there is an appropriated place to insert the names of the authors. Use full name, affiliations, e-mail and the ORCID.

3.3 Abstract

The abstract should be structured as follows: 

• Context: The abstract should begin with a Context, presenting the arguments that supported the research. 
• Originality/contribution/gap/innovation: authors should indicate the innovation, contribution or which gap the manuscript fills in the Forest Science.
• Objective: it should clearly state what the author intended to accomplish.
• Methodology: this topic should include a brief description of the material and methods of the study.
• Results: it should have a systematic description of the results, highlighting the main data for the readers. 
• Conclusion: conclusions should be linked to objective, providing answers, explanations, major findings of the study based on results and discussion. Conclusions can also summarize potential implications.

References and abbreviations are not accepted in this topic.

3.4 Keywords

After abstract, indicate three keywords, separated by semicolon. Do not use words in plural, “or”, “and”, abbreviations and acronyms.  Words from title are not accepted. Only the first letter of each keyword must be capitalized.

3.5 Introduction

Introduction should clearly indicate the importance of the problem and point out the knowledge gaps based on own knowledge and references. The originality of the research and its application should be concisely presented. The description of the introduction should justify each objective of the research.

The reader should imagine what are the objectives of the research when reading the introduction. The study’s motivation is particularly important to encourage readers to continue or to help editors and reviewers define whether the article should or not be published. This regards mainly to studies that, at first, should be considered as repetitions of other studies. The introduction should contain references related to the subject that support the originality or application of the study. Arguments such as “lack of studies”, “scarce references” and citation of books should be avoided in this section. The research objectives should be included at the end of the introduction.

3.6 Material and methods

This section must support the necessary information in order to replicate the experimental work. For fieldwork, the study area should be described in detail, with geographic coordinates and maps, if needed. The models of any statistical analysis must be clearly explained. The main recommendations are:

• Material and methods should be described in the same order of the objectives.
• Cite The published methods should be cited and only relevant changes should be described.
• Characterize, objectively, humans, plants, animals, organisms, machines, physical variables, instruments of measurement, etc.

3.7 Results

Results must be clear and concise, outlining major findings. The results to be included are only those required to support the discussion and the conclusions. In this section, discussion should not be presented. Results should be described in the same order of the Material and Methods section. Detailed results can be presented as tables or figures and should not be repeated in the text.

3.8 Discussion

In this section, the author should discuss the meaning of the research results and not repeat them. The discussion must be confronted with relevant literature and be described in the same order of the presentation of the results.
The discussion generally should contain the main findings, indicating their meanings and implications for science and innovative practices. The relations with the current knowledge as well limitations or constraints must also be mentioned. Tables and Figures citations are not accepted in the discussion of the manuscript.

3.9 Conclusions

Conclusions should be concise, highlighting the main findings of the study according to the objectives Conclusion is considered one of the most important part of the manuscript. The main recommendations for making the conclusions are:

• Explain the possible implications and consequences of the study.
• Avoid abbreviations, acronyms and references.
• Show the original contribution or the innovation of the research.
• Answer the objectives of the study.

3.10 Acknowledgements (opitional)

Acknowledgements must be concise and be limited to funding agencies or to other means of supporting research and, . should be included only in the submission procedure.

3.11 References

Reference list should be included according to the style adopted by Revista Árvore, as already described.

There is no fee for submitting and evaluating articles.
