Basic information

 

The Revista Brasileira de Ophthalmologia has been published since 1942 and is in its 80th volume. The Revista Brasileira de Ophthalmologia is currently a bimonthly publication, going to continuous publication in June 2021. It represents a large part of the history of publications in Brazilian Ophthalmology. Its purpose is to disseminate unpublished technical and scientific works, resulting from research and reviews of ophthalmological and related topics.

Its abbreviated title is Rev. Bras. Oftalmol., which should be used in bibliographies, footnotes and bibliographical references and strips.

Instructions to authors

 

 

Scope

The Revista Brasileira de Oftalmologia (Rev Bras Oftalmol.), e-ISSN 1982-8551, is a scientific continuous publication of the Sociedade Brasileira de Oftalmologia, aimed to disseminate articles that contribute to improvement and development of the practice, research and teaching of Ophthalmology and related specialties.

All manuscripts, after approval by the Editors, are assessed by two or three qualified reviewers (peer review), and anonymity is ensured throughout the judging process (blind review). The comments of reviewers are sent to the authors, who modify the text or justify why they will not make changes. Only after the final approvals by reviewers and editors, are manuscripts submitted for publication.

The articles that have no merit, contain significant methodology errors, or do not fit in the editorial policy of the journal, will be rejected and not be open to appeal.

The manuscripts accepted for publication become property of the journal, and cannot be partially or totally edited, by any other media, without prior written authorization by the Editor-in-Chief.

The articles published by the journal do not necessarily reflect the opinion of the publication, its Editors and/or the Society in charge of it. The Revista Brasileira de Oftalmologia does not endorse the opinion of authors, and is exempt from any responsibility regarding the signed texts.

The Revista Brasileira de Oftalmologia is an open access journal and does not charge any fees for submission, review, translation, and publication of articles. All processes are conducted electronically.

The content of the journal is under a Creative Commons (CC BY) Attribution 4.0 International license.

The articles published in the Revista Brasileira de Oftalmologia comply with the uniform requirements recommended by the International Committee of Medical Journal Editors, updated in 2019 and available at http://www.icmje.org

Submission of manuscripts

All research, both clinical and experimental, should have been conducted according to the Declaration of Helsinki.

The manuscripts can be written in Portuguese or English and are electronically published in the language they are submitted. The text should be submitted in Arial font size 12, A4 page size, double-spaced, with 2.5-cm margins in all sides.

The Revista Brasileira de Oftalmologia accepts for publication: Original Articles of basic, clinical or surgical experimental research; Case Reports to inform on management of relevant clinical cases; Review Articles presenting reviews of specific topics or updates; Imaging Articles, Brief Communication and Letters to the Editor. The Editorials are written upon invitation, presenting comments on relevant manuscripts of the journal, important research published, or communications of the editors that are of interest to the specialty. Articles with commercial or advertising purposes will be rejected.

The texts should obey a predetermined structure according to each type of manuscript. The Revista Brasileira de Oftalmologia reserves the right to not accept for review the manuscripts that do not meet the criteria herein described.

Original article

Describes experimental research or clinical investigation, which is complete and previously unpublished, prospective or retrospective, randomized or double-blind. It should have title in Portuguese and English, structured abstract with keywords, introduction, methods, results, discussion, conclusion and references.

It should have, at most, 5,000 words (excluding the references), 40 references and six tables/figures.

Review article

Designed to examine the literature published on a particular subject, making a critical and systematic review of the literature on a specific topic, and present the key conclusions, based on this literature. It is only accepted for publication when requested by the Editors. It should have title in Portuguese and English, abstract with keywords, text, and references.

The text should have up to 5,000 words (excluding references) with a maximum of six authors, 50 references and eight tables/figures.

Update article

Review of the state-of-the-art on a given topic, written by an expert invited by the Editors. It should have title in Portuguese and English, abstract with keywords, text, and references.

Case report

It should be informative and should not contain irrelevant details. Only clinical Case Reports of great importance, either by describing a rare disease or by the unusual presentation, will be accepted. Patient´s consent is compulsory, and whenever the Case Report demands use of their imaging, a permission to use the images must be obtained in the Informed Consent Form, or in a separate document. The Case Report should contain title in Portuguese and English, abstract with keywords, introduction, objective description of the case, discussion, and references.

It should have up to 2,500 words (including references, legends of figures and tables), with a maximum of six authors, 15 references, and four tables/figures.

Imaging

The publication of ophthalmological images includes photographs of ocular attachments and images of anterior and posterior segments obtained by the authors must have a minimum resolution of 300 DPI for the final size of the publication (approximately 2,500 x 3,300 pixels, for full page), in addition to the publication of new techniques used or unusual treatments in the specialty.

This text does not allow discussion by the authors. The text must be limited to 500 words, with a maximum of three authors and three figures. It is not necessary to present an abstract, and tables are not allowed.

Brief communication

Brief Communications are short articles presenting original and relevant material for fast dissemination. For instance, a brief communication may focus on a specific aspect of a problem, or a new discovery expected to have a significant impact.

It should be presented according to the instructions for Original Articles. It should have at most 1,500 words (excluding abstracts, tables, figures, and references). The abstract is structured (objectives, methods, results, and conclusion) and  limited to 150 words. It should have up to four authors, ten references and two figures and/or tables.

Brief Communications will always be reviewed by at least one chief editor and/or associate editor, and given priority for fast publication

Letter to the Editor

It aims to comment or discuss manuscripts published in the journal, or to report ongoing original research. They will be published at the Editors´ discretion, with the respective reply, whenever applicable.

Preparing a manuscript

Cover page

  • Title of the manuscript, in Portuguese and English, containing 10 to 12 words, not counting articles and prepositions. The title should arouse interest and prompt the objectives and content of the manuscript.
  • Full name of each author, with no abbreviations. If the author already has a format used in their publications, must inform the journal secretary.
  • Digital identifier of ORCID (Open Researcher and Contributor ID). Further information on register and getting the ORCID identifier are provided at https://orcid.org. It is important to have all data of the author publicly available at ORCID record.
  • Institutional affiliation of each author, separately. In case of more than one institutional affiliation, indicate only the affiliation to which the publication credit will be attributed. Positions and/or administrative functions should not be informed.
  • Indication of the organization where the work was conducted.
  • Name, address, and Email of the corresponding author.
  • Source of support to research, if any.
  • Disclosure of conflicts of interest.

Abstract and keywords

Abstract, in Portuguese and English, with 150 to 300 words. For Original Articles, the abstract should be structured (Objective, Methods, Results and Conclusion), underlining the most significant data of the manuscript. For Case Reports, Reviews or Updates, the abstract should not be structured. Below the abstract, indicate, at least, five, and, at most, ten keywords that define the subject of the work. The keywords should ser based on the Health Sciences Descriptors (DeCS/MeSH) available at https://decs.bvsalud.org

Below the abstract, for clinical trials, indicate the registration number at the database ClinicalTrials.gov.

Text

It should strictly follow the structure for each category of manuscript.

Introduction

It should be brief and contain the objective and subject of the work.

Methods

They should contain enough information to explain how the research methods and processes were conducted. The description should be clear and enough for another researcher to reproduce or to continue the study. It should describe the statistical methodology employed with sufficient details, to assure any reader with reasonable knowledge on the topic, and access to the original data, can verify the results reported.

Avoid using imprecise terms, such as “random”, “normal”, “significant”, “important”, “acceptable”, and not defining them. The research results should be reported in this chapter, concisely and in a logical sequence.

Information about management of postoperative pain, both in humans and animals, should be reported in the text, according to the Resolution 196/96, of the Ministry of Health, and the guidelines Animal Research:Reporting In Vivo Experiments (ARRIVE), to report studies on animals, available at https://www.nc3rs.org.uk/arrive-guidelines

Results

Whenever possible, they should be presented in tables, graphs, or figures.

Discussion

All results of the manuscript should be discussed and compared to relevant literature.

Conclusion

It should be based on the results obtained.

Acknowledgments

Collaborations of individuals and organizations, or acknowledgments for financial and technical support, that deserve recognition but do not justify their inclusion as authors, should be mentioned in this section.

References

They should be updated and contain, preferably, the most relevant works published in the last five years on the subject. They should not include works not mentioned in the text. Whenever appropriate, it is recommended to include works published in the Brazilian literature.

In the text, citations of authors should be numbered sequentially, using superscript Arabic numerals, within parentheses. Avoid mentioning names of authors in the text.

In the reference list after the text, the references should be numbered consecutively, in the order in which they are first mentioned in the text, and identified by Arabic numerals.

The presentation should comply with the Vancouver style, as per the following examples. The titles of journals should be abbreviated according to the style presented by the National Library of Medicine, available in the NLM Catalog:Journals referenced in the NCBI Databases, at https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/nlmcatalog/journals

For all references, list all authors up to six. If there are more authors, list the first six authors, followed by et al.

Tables and figures

All tables and figures should also be sent in digital file - tables preferably in Microsoft WordWord®, and figures in Microsoft Excel®, tiff or JPG files. Numbers, units, and symbols used in tables should comply with the national nomenclature.

Legends

All figures (graphs, photographs, and figures) and tables should always have legends. Each legend should be numbered in Arabic numerals, corresponding to the citations in the text.

If the illustrations have already been published, they should have written authorization by the author or editor, and indicate the source where it was published, with the complete reference.

Abbreviations and acronyms

They should be preceded by the full name, when first mentioned in the text, or in the legends of tables and figures.

Submission

All manuscripts should ser electronically submitted at platform ScholarOne, available at https://rbojournal.org

Upon submission, please include:

  • A cover letter signed by all authors, authorizing the publication of the manuscript, and declaring it is original, has not been submitted for publication in another journal, and was approved by the Research Ethics Committee of the organization where the study was conducted.
  • Disclosure of conflicts of interest, whenever applicable. According to the Resolution 1595/2000, of the Brazilian Federal Medical Council, this disclosure forbids promotion or advertising of any commercial products or equipment, in a scientific article.
  • Information on sources of financing for research.
  • Declaration stating the participants signed an Informed Consent Form, if the work is a clinical research involving humans or Case Reports.
  • Approval by the Ethics Committee and the number of the Proof of Application for Ethical Review (CAEE) for all Original Articles.

Authorship

Only those who contributed to the intellectual content of the article should be included in the list of authors, according to the following criteria: having contributed to conception and design, or data collection, or data analysis and interpretation, and having participated in writing of the manuscript and/or critical review of content. The contributions of each author should be informed in the end of the manuscript.

Declaration of copyright transfer

After acceptance of the manuscript, an authorization for publication and unrestricted copyright transfer must be signed by all authors and sent to the journal.

Plagiarism and misconduct

Regarding the policy of protection and intellectual property, the journal adopts specific procedures to combat the practice of plagiarism in publications. All manuscripts are submitted to a check using a plagiarism detection software. In case of suspected plagiarism or misconduct, the case is taken up for debate with the Associate Editors, for a consensus decision making.

Preprints

Considering the journal adopts the blind peer review, the manuscripts deposited in preprintrepositories will not be accepted for assessment.

Open data

The Revista Brasileira de Oftalmologia shares the good practices of open science and the importance of providing data in repositories/datasets; however, data deposit will not be a requirement for submitting manuscripts till the editorial processes are revised.

Ethical principles

All processes are developed according to the ethical principles of the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE), the Code of Ethics of the American Educational Research Association (AERA), the Code of Good Scientific Practices of The State of São Paulo Research Foundation (Fapesp), and the recommendations provided by the Council of Science Editors (CSE) for publication. To promote research integrity and strengthen transparency in the process, any material published is in accordance with the Guidelines on Best Practices for Strengthening Ethics in Scientific Publication.

Checklist to authors

Before sending the manuscript, the authors should check if all items listed below are available:

  • Declaration of author´s contribution filled in and saved as a digital file to be sent as a complementary document.
  • Disclosure forms for potential conflicts of interest of all authors, filled in and saved as digital files to be sent as complementary documents.
  • Compulsory information on ORCID of all participants of the manuscript, saved as a digital file to be sent as a complementary document.
  • Digital version of the Research Ethics Committee report, whenever applicable, containing the approval of the project to be sent as a complementary document.
  • Manuscript prepared according to the Instructions to Authors.
  • Check the maximum number of words, tables, figures, and references, according to the type of manuscript.
  • Cover page, including the number of the clinical trial registration, separate from the main document.

All figures and tables uploaded separate, as complementary documents. They should not be part of the main document of the manuscript

The identification number should be included below the abstract.
