Scope and policy

The Revista do Instituto de Medicina Tropical de São Paulo (Journal of the São Paulo Institute of Tropical Medicine) is a journal devoted to research on the different aspects of transmissible diseases. The Journal welcomes original works on all transmissible diseases. Each issue may contain, besides original papers, brief communications, preliminary reports, technical reports, reviews and correspondence. Reports on meetings are also accepted. The journal publishes papers only in English.

From 2016 on, the Revista do Instituto de Medicina Tropical de São Paulo (Journal of the São Paulo Institute of Tropical Medicine) will be published only on-line, free access.

Papers written in English (we advise authors with English as a foreign language to have their manuscripts checked by someone with English as a first language, preferably a scientist), should be sent to the Editor, Revista do Instituto de Medicina Tropical de São Paulo. Manuscripts will be peer-reviewed by two or three referees of the Editorial Board and/or ad hoc reviewers. The decision of acceptance for publication lies with the Editors and is based on the recommendations of these referees. A form stating the following items should be sent to the Editorial Office signed by all Authors of the article: 1) The manuscript and all parts of it have not been submitted elsewhere; 2) There are no financial or other relationships from any of the authors of the manuscript that might lead to any conflict of interest; 3) The submitted manuscript has been read by all authors carefully. All authors agree that the manuscript represents their work. 4) Describe sources of funding that have supported the work. Please also describe the role of the study sponsor(s), if any, in study design; collection, analysis, and interpretation of data; writing of the paper; and decision to submit it for publication; 5) The corresponding author is indicated below and will be responsible for communicating with the other authors about revisions and final approval of the paper. The manuscripts will be received only by on-line submission at:, where the authors can check the status of the submission any time. The electronic file will be used for editorial assessment and online refereeing, and the editorial decisions on the manuscript will be communicated to the authors.

Authors may suggest up to four potential reviewers for their work, giving the e-mail and affiliation for each person they propose.

Form and preparation of manuscripts

Original papers - The text should be preceded by a short summary not exceeding 200 words, and should then proceed to sections of Introduction, Material and Methods, Results, Discussion, Acknowledgements and References. All papers should contain a summary in English and Portuguese or Spanish, with title in Portuguese or Spanish. Pages should be numbered consecutively in Arabic numerals. Tables and figures should be referred to in the text together with an indication of their approximate position recorded in the text margin. Tables should be numbered and contain a brief specific title. Drawings as well as halftones (photographs, photomicrographs, electron micrographs, or roentgenograms) should be planned to suit the size of a single or double page column. Images should be submitted preferably in TIF format.

If there are color images the author will be asked to contribute towards the cost of reproduction.

Acknowledgments should be brief, and should not include thanks to anonymous referees and editors, or effusive comments. Grant or contribution numbers may be acknowledged. Revista do Instituto de Medicina Tropical de São Paulo encourages authors to include a statement to specify the individual contributions of each co-author, which will be published under a separate subheading "Author contributions" following the Acknowledgments.

Brief communications, preliminary and technical reports and letters to the editor are reserved for reporting new observations of critical importance. They should not exceed two or three printed pages, including the illustrations and references. Preliminary reports will be published in the next issue going to press, after acceptation by referees.

Review articles by investigators who have made substantial contributions to a specific area of transmissible diseases will be published by invitation of the editorial board.

However, a review article may be submitted to the editor and if it is judged appropriate after peer revision it will be published. A review article should be presented in the same format as a full paper, except that it would not have to be divided into sections such as introduction, material and methods, results and discussion. It should, however, contain abstracts both in English and Portuguese or Spanish.

Review articles, brief communications, preliminary and technical reports, and correspondence published in a recent number of the journal should be used as models for formatting.

The list of REFERENCES, including only those actually mentioned in the text or tables, should be in alphabetical order in the Vancouver format and numbered consecutively in Arabic numerals. Citation in the text is by these numbers, and only exceptionally by name and year. Listing should be as follows:

a) Articles from journals: Last names and initials of all authors (unless there are more than six, when only the first six should be given followed by et al.), full title of the article, title of the journal (title abbreviation by NLM -, the year of publication, the volume number, the first and last page numbers.
