Aims and scope
Editorial policy: The journal aims at disseminating the scientific production of teaching and research institutions whose environment fosters the development of interdisciplinary research. It receives contributions from different knowledge areas (exact, biological and social sciences) and can socialize emerging forms of approaching its object. Another aim is to disseminate the production of researchers and technicians from government agencies, such as state and municipal health departments. These agencies release results from their research studies, evaluation of implanted programs, etc., with important contributions that cannot be restricted to internal circulation reports, since they offer contributions to the advance of debate and to the exchange of ideas about challenging themes, whose roots can be found in the very multi-disciplinary nature of the area. Articles of particular interest are those that try and establish an interface between health, human and social sciences.
Areas of interest: Since its creation, Saúde e Sociedade has published works from different knowledge areas that are interrelated or that are concerned with public/collective health. In this sense, it encompasses the production of different branches of the human and social sciences and of the emerging environmental science, incorporating scientific and theoretical production and also the one specifically related to proposals for intervention and institutional practice.
Types of articles: The journal publishes original material of research and knowledge update, and of reflective nature, in the form of:
a) Original research papers;
b) Analysis of great themes of interest to the area;
c) Theoretical, methodological or technical essays that stimulate debates or the treatment of specific themes under different foci;
d) Literature update articles;
e) Experience reports in the areas of research, teaching and health services provision;
f) Presentation of ongoing studies, research or practical experiences, as well as preliminary results;
g) Letters to the editor with comments on ideas expressed in articles published by the journal, in order to foster a critical reflection on themes in the area;
h) Short comments, news or criticisms regarding published books of interest to the area;
i) Interviews or testimonies of personalities and specialists in the area, aiming at the reconstruction of public/collective health’s history or providing current information about themes of interest; and
j) Proceedings of São Paulo's public health congresses promoted by APSP, as well as of other scientific events related to the journal's editorial line.
The journal publishes spontaneous contributions that fit its editorial policy, as well as specialists’ articles written by request.
Articles that present an interface between health and the human sciences are especially welcome.
Peer review procedures: The Editorial Board (EB) has the collaboration of referees, co-participants in the assessment process of the submitted manuscripts. The referees are designated ad hoc by the EB, selected among specialists known for their technical and scientific competence. Their role is to collaborate in the appraisal of the manuscripts submitted for publication. The referees have the authority to decide on the convenience of manuscripts acceptance, and they may suggest modifications to the authors. Each work is appraised by at least two referees, whose names are not disclosed to authors and who also do not have authors' names disclosed.
Audience: health professionals in general, professors, researchers, and specialists in Public/Collective Health and connected areas.
The contents of the articles submitted for publication must not have been previously published or simultaneously submitted to any other journal. The articles published in Saúde e Sociedade may be reproduced in other publications if approved, in written, by the Editors.
People designated as authors must have participated in the preparation of the papers, so that they may assume public responsibility for its contents. To be qualified as author, it is necessary to have taken part in the conception, structuration, analisys or interpretation of data, or must have written the paper or participated of its critical revision and approval of the version to be published.
At the end of the article, the individual contributions of each author for the paper must be specified.
Selection of articles and peer-review
On selecting articles for publication, the scientific merit of the work and its compliance with the editorial guidelines adopted by the journal are assessed.
Saúde e Sociedade submits all originals for evaluation by the Editorial Commission, which is supported by ad hoc consultants who have authority to make decisions about the convenience of their acceptance, and also to send them back to the authors with suggestions for amendments. Each work shall be assessed by at least two reviewers, whose names shall be kept in confidentiality, and who will not be apprised of the name of the author(s).
Form and preparation of manuscripts
A4 paper, 2.5 cm margins, 1.5 space, font Times New Roman 12. Maximum number of pages: 20 (including illustrations and references).
Title: concise and informative in the language of the text and in English. Insert as footnote the funding source for the research.
Author(s) name(s) and address(es): everyone should inform her/his institutional affiliation (in descending order, for instance: University, College, and Department) and e-mail. The author responsible for correspondence should also inform her/his full address (street, city, ZIP code, state, country).
Abstract: it should reflect the fundamental aspects of the works, with at least 150 words and at most 250 words, including aims, methods and results. The abstract should precede the text and be in the language of the text and in English. The title should also be in English.
Keywords: from 3 to 6, in the language of the text and in English, presented after the abstract. The authors should consult DeCS (Descritores em Ciências da Saúde) and/or Sociological Abstracts.
Graphs and tables: Graphs and tables should be presented in the original program (as example, in Excel: in xls), properly identified, in shades of grey or black and white.
Images: Images (figures and photos) should be in high resolution (300 dpi), in JPG or TIF, at least 8 cm wide.
Citations in the text: they should mention the author last name (small-case letter), year of publication and the page number in case of literal quotation, corresponding to the respective references. In case of more than two authors, the first must be mentioned followed by et al.
The authors are responsible for accuracy of the references cited in the text. They must comply with ABNT NBR 6023 [Brazilian Association of Technical Standards], be presented at the end of the work in alphabetical order by the last name of the first author.
