The on-line journal Sexuality, Health and Society is a project by the Latin American Center on Sexuality and Human Rights (CLAM-IMS/UERJ), seeking to promote the exchange of Latin American scholarly work, and its dissemination among researchers, social activists, and policymakers. The journal receives unpublished articles that, with a focus on Latin America, explore cultural and political dimensions of sexualities, and bring relevant and original contributions to the subject.

Sexualidad, Salud y Sociedad- Revista Latinoamericana is mainly interested in:

a)Practices and social representations sexualities/eroticism, and their connections different to social markers of difference (gender, class, skin color/race, ethnicity/nationality, life course stages/generation, etc.);

b) public policy, juridical frameworks, and the political action of different civil society actors (social movements, religious groups, NGOs, funding agencies, etc.) in the process of institution of sexual and reproductive rights in the domains of health, justice, and education, among others.

c) scientific theories and expert knowledge on sexuality  with emphasis on the role of public health for the development of research and public policies in this area.

The journal will privilege the perspective of the Humanities and the Social Sciences. Articles may be written in one of three languages: English, Portuguese, or Spanish. The contributions may include theoretical discussions; the analysis of empirical data or research results; literature reviews. For its Book Review section, books reviewed must have been published in the past two years and focus the Journal  main thematic interests.

Process of assessment by peers on a "double blind" basis

The thematic and disciplinary relevance of texts to be reviewed by peers on a "double blind" basis will be previously evaluated by the editors. To be published, the papers submitted must obtain favorable indications from two reviewers who master the subject. In case of disparity, the text will be subjected to critical review by a third ad hoc evaluator, from which the editorial decision to publish or not will be made. The articles sent for assessment by the Journal must not be under the process of assessment by any other publication.

Grammar and style review

Once the “double blind” peer review process has been completed and the editorial decision in favor of publication has been taken, it will be up to authors to submit the text to grammatical and style correction, if editors and / or reviewers consider such correction necessary. The name of the reviewer, his credentials and contact details must be informed to the journal and appear in a footnote in the body of the article.

Articles

Articles must be unpublished and must present original discussions that are relevant and pertinent to the areas of interest of the journal, and whose focus is on Latin-American countries;

Articles must have a maximum of 50,000 characters with spaces, including title, abstract and keywords (in Spanish, Portuguese and English), notes and bibliographic references.

Articles are accepted for evaluation and may be published in English, Portuguese, or Spanish.
Articles must include an abstract (with spaces), and five keywords in the language in which the text is written, totaling of up to 1000 characters. The abstract must highlight the article’s main purpose, methods, results, and main conclusions.
Texts originally written in Spanish or Portuguese must also include a thoroughly proofread title, abstract and keywords in English. Articles written in English must include a Spanish translation of those elements. Translations may be reviewed and re-written by the journal.
To guarantee the anonymity of the peer-review process, manuscripts must not contain any marks of authorship, i.e., the authors’ names shall not appear in the body of the text, including references in notes, bibliography, acknowledgements, etc. Those pieces of information must be substituted by the symbol $, and may be reinserted once the article has been accepted for publication. Authors’ data (name, institutional affiliation, city/country, e-mail, etc.) must be inserted in the appropriate fields of the journal’s electronic submission form.

Articles must have a maximum of 50,000 characters with spaces, including title, abstract and keywords (in Spanish, Portuguese and English), notes and bibliographic references.
Texts must be written and edited in Word, with .doc format, letter Arial 12, with 1.5 space. The page configuration will be A4, with 3 cm margins (top, bottom, left and right). The page numbers should be placed in the upper right corner (Arial 10). The title of the work must be centered, font Arial 14, in bold, with capital letters and space 1.5. If there is a subtitle, it must be written in lowercase letters. Abstracts should be in Arial 12, with single space.
Each article may have a maximum of 4 (four) authors. In exceptional cases and subject to a reasoned justification sent to the Journal by the main author, this limit may be exceeded.

In the case of multiple authorship, the type of participation of each author must be explained according to the following categories:1.Conceptualization – Ideas; formulation or evolution of overarching research goals and aims; 2.Data curation – Management activities to annotate (produce metadata), scrub data and maintain research data (including software code, where it is necessary for interpreting the data itself) for initial use and later re-use. 3; Formal analysis – Application of statistical, mathematical, computational, or other formal techniques to analyze or synthesize study data; 4. Funding acquisition - Acquisition of the financial support for the project leading to this publication; 5. Investigation – Conducting a research and investigation process, specifically performing the experiments, or data/evidence collection; 6. Methodology – Development or design of methodology; creation of models; 7. Project administration – Management and coordination responsibility for the research activity planning and execution. 8; Resources – Provision of study materials, reagents, materials, patients, laboratory samples, animals, instrumentation, computing resources, or other analysis tools; 9. Software – Programming, software development; designing computer programs; implementation of the computer code and supporting algorithms; testing of existing code components; 10. Supervision – Oversight and leadership responsibility for the research activity planning and execution, including mentorship external to the core team; 11. Validation – Verification, whether as a part of the activity or separate, of the overall replication/reproducibility of results/experiments and other research outputs; 12. Visualization – Preparation, creation and/or presentation of the published work, specifically visualization/data presentation; 13. Writing – original draft – Preparation, creation and/or presentation of the published work, specifically writing the initial draft (including substantive translation); 14. Writing – review & editing – Preparation, creation and/or presentation of the published work by those from the original research group, specifically critical review, commentary or revision – including pre- or post-publication stages.

Book reviews

1. Sexualidad, Salud y Sociedad welcomes unpublished original reviews of books published within the past two years, on topics within the interest and scope of the journal (See "about" / Scope and editorial policy). Reviews submitted must not be under evaluation or edition by another publication.
2. Book reviews must not exceed 20,000 characters (with spaces) in length.
3. Book reviews do not have a title; they must be headed by the full bibliographic reference of the reviewed book (in accordance to the journal’s norms for bibliographic references).
4. The author of the review must insert, below the reviewed book’s full bibliographic reference, his or her name, title, institutional affiliation, city, country, and e-mail.
5. Book reviews must not include notes.
6. If the text of the book review includes other bibliographic citations, those must follow the journal’s Author Guidelines for bibliographic references.
7. In order to submit a book review, one must register as “author” in the journal’s electronic submission system.
8. After evaluation of the pertinence of the topic and the adequacy of written style, the journal’s Review Editors may accept the book review as is, suggest revisions, or reject it, according to the journal’s editorial criteria.
9. Acceptance of a book review for publication does not guarantee its inclusion in the next issue ofSexualidad, Salud y Sociedad.
10. It will be up to authors to submit the text to grammatical and style correction, if editors and / or reviewers consider such correction necessary.

Interviews

Sexualidad, Salud y Sociedad will publish interviews with key actors (researchers, activists, public managers, etc.) whose work is relevant to the areas of interest of the Journal.

Footnotes, citations, and bibliographic references

Sexualidad, Salud y Sociedad follows ISO 690/87, e ISO 690-2/97 international standards (the latter specifically with regard to electronica documents).
1. Notes shall be inserted at the foot of the page, and must not consist only of bibliographic references.
2. Bibliographic reference identifying the publication from which a passage has been extracted shall be inserted in the main body of text, in the following format: author’s surname, year of publication of the version used, as listed in the article’s bibliographic references, page number/s, all between parentheses. If two or more references have the same author and year, they shall be differentiated by using lowercase letters (a, b, c) after the year. When paraphrasing an idea, use the same reference style, omitting the page number;
3. Direct quotes, up to three lines, shall be transcribed between quotation marks. Citations of more than three lines must be indented 4 cm to the right of the left margin, without quotation marks, using Arial 10 fonts;
4. The complete list of bibliographic references cited must be placed at the end of the text, following ISO standards (see above), as in the following examples.

Citing electronic documents

Bibliographic references to electronic documents shall follow ISO 690-2/97 standards. In general, they must include: author’s surname (in capital letters); name of the autor/s; date of publication (between parentheses); document title; type of media [CD ROM, online, etc.]; editor; 'Available at:' indicating URL; date of latest access [between brackets]. In the case of electronic periodicals or series, issue number shall also be included (volume, issue, etc.). URLs must be active at the time of submission.

References to laws, rules and decrees

Bibliographic references referring to laws, rules, decrees and legal documents must conform to ABNT Standard 6023/2018. Federal constitutions, constitutional amendments and infraconstitutional legal texts (decrees, ordinances, resolutions, provisional measures, resolutions etc.) fall within this scope. In general terms, it must include: authorship / entity that publishes the legal document (in capital letters), title of the document, menu, place and date of publication, link to access and access date. In the case of a printed document, include city, publisher, year and the range of pages.

Articles submitted for evaluation must not be under consideration for publication by other journals.

Publishing Rights

By sending their articles to be assessed, the authors assume that the texts, illustrations, charts and bibliographic references, etc. therein are their own responsibility and reveal their own opinion rather than the opinion of Sexuality, Health and Society- Latin American Journal.

Just by sending their paper, the authors allow editors to eventually publish the paper and relinquish all rights to that end.

Right after sending an article to Sexuality, Health and Society - Latin American Journal through the Journal´s electronic editorial management and publication system (www.sexualidadsaludysociedad.org), authors must send an email to sexualidadsaludysociedad@gmail.com a signed copy of the following letter:

I hereby certify that the article titled (title of the article) submitted to the Journal Sexuality, Health and Society- Latin American Journal, has not been published before. Furthermore, I promise not to submit the paper for assessment to any other publication while it is being assessed by Sexuality, Health and Society- Latin American Journal, in case it is approved by the former Journal.

I hereby declare that the article is original and that the contents therein are of my authorship. All the data and references to previous publications and their corresponding credits have been duly identified and included in the bibliographic notes and quotes that are indicated as such. If required, I have the corresponding authorizations granted by the owners of the respective rights. 

I hereby declare that the materials are copyright free and I assume responsibility for any law-suit or claim related to Intellectual Property Law, exonerating Sexuality, Health and Society - Latin American Journal of any responsibility.

In case the article is approved for its publication, I grant Sexuality, Health and Society- Latin American Journal authorization for its publication within an unlimited period of time. Full or partial reproduction of texts published in Sexuality, Health and Society - Latin American Journal by other publications shall clearly and unequivocally indicate that it was first published in the former Journal (stating number, date and pages).

Registration and login in www.sexualidadsaludysociedad.org are required to submit items online and to check the status of current submissions.

As part of the submission process, authors are required to check off their submission's compliance with all of the following items, and submissions may be returned to authors that do not adhere to these guidelines.

1. The contribution is original, unpublished, and it is not under assessment by other journal. if this is not the case, a "Note to the editors" must be added Submitted files must be in Microsoft Word, graphics and/or charters must be inserted in the text and not as an annex to the document) in jpg format, 300 dpi, with their corresponding names and numbers, references and sources.
2. The articles includes an abstract (1000 character maximum, with spaces), and five keywords. The title of the article, its abstract and the key words must be also in English, as long as that is not the original language of the text. If that is the case, the same elements must also be in Spanish.
3. All URLs referenced in the text are active.
4. . Notes must be at the bottom of the page and cannot be only. The complete list of bibliographic references must be at the end of the text , in accordance with the directives for authors in the About the Journal section..
